Chapter 4 - THE EMAIL BEFORE THE FIRST DATE

At eight the next morning, the board of Vale Meridian gathered inside a private conference room at the Halston Grand.
Dominic sat at the head of the table.
He had changed into a navy suit and covered the swelling on his cheek with makeup. Chloe sat two chairs away with her attorney. Meredith occupied the opposite end of the table beside her father, Charles Cole.
Vivienne entered with Victor.
She wore the same pale dress from the night before. Sophia was safely at Victor’s home with Caroline, eating pancakes and watching cartoons.
Dominic rose.
“Vivienne, we should speak before this begins.”
“We had nine years to speak.”
“This is our marriage.”
“No. This is the part of our marriage you put on company letterhead.”
The board chair, Elaine Porter, called the meeting to order. She was a former federal judge who had invested her own money in Vale Meridian and disliked surprises.
Victor’s attorneys distributed the evidence.
The forged guaranty.
The false trust letter.
The transfers to Chloe’s consulting company.
The private apartment.
The messages to Meredith.
Dominic denied the financial fraud. Chloe claimed she had processed payments at his direction without understanding their purpose.
Then Meredith read one of Dominic’s messages aloud.
After tonight, Owen will finally have the family name he deserves. Once the merger is signed, no one can interfere with us.
Charles Cole removed his glasses.
“You used my grandson to influence my vote.”
Dominic leaned forward. “I love Meredith.”
Meredith’s eyes flashed.
“You told me a six-year-old child was dead.”
“I was trapped in a marriage that had been over for years.”
Vivienne spoke for the first time.
“You came home three nights ago and helped Sophia build a blanket fort.”
Dominic looked at her.
“You kissed me in the kitchen and asked whether we should take her to Yellowstone this summer.”
He lowered his voice. “Things were complicated.”
“No. You made them complicated so every person in your life would hear a different story.”
Dominic turned to the board.
“The Sterling family is attempting a hostile takeover because Vivienne feels humiliated. They want control of what I built.”
Victor remained seated.
“Vale Meridian’s payroll was missed twice before Sterling Ridge Capital intervened. Its patents were refinanced through our bank. Its expansion was funded by investors my sister never pressured us to provide.”
Dominic struck the table with his palm.
“I earned those investments.”
“You obtained them through fraud.”
Elaine Porter looked toward Victor. “You said there was evidence of prior intent.”
Vivienne’s chest tightened.
Victor placed the printed email in front of each board member.
Dominic recognized it immediately.
His face changed before anyone read a word.
Elaine read silently. Then she looked at him with open disgust.
Vivienne picked up her copy.
Though she already knew the words, seeing them in the room where Dominic expected to defend his career made them sharper.
Sterling’s youngest daughter is coordinating the museum fundraiser next month. She wants a normal life. If I approach this carefully, she could be the connection we need.
The boardroom fell silent.
Dominic turned toward Chloe.
“You kept that?”
Chloe’s attorney whispered urgently, but Chloe was staring at him with panic.
“You told me to archive everything,” she said.
Vivienne almost laughed.
Their careful planning had outlived their loyalty.
Elaine looked at Dominic. “You researched your future wife before arranging your first meeting?”
“It wasn’t like that.”
Victor placed Chloe’s response on the screen.
Women like her need to believe they chose you.
Vivienne felt the grief rise, hot and immediate, but she refused to let it silence her.
She looked directly at Dominic.
“Did you ever walk into a room with me without calculating what I could give you?”
His face softened.
For one dangerous second, he looked like the man she had loved.
“Not at first,” he admitted.
The honesty hurt more than another lie.
“But later, yes. I loved you. I love Sophia.”
“You loved being forgiven,” Vivienne said. “You loved coming home to people who did not know what you were doing outside it.”
“I made mistakes.”
“A mistake is forgetting an anniversary. You researched me, arranged our meeting, forged my signature, invented our deaths, and taught another child to call you Dad.”
Dominic stood.
“I did what I had to do to survive among people born with everything.”
Vivienne’s voice remained steady.
“My family’s money did not make you lie to two children.”
He looked around the table, searching for sympathy.
None came.
Elaine called for a vote.
The board removed Dominic as chief executive and executive vice president, effective immediately. His shares were placed under litigation hold. The company referred the forged documents and diverted funds to federal investigators.
Chloe was terminated for cause.
The merger with Cole North was canceled.
Dominic remained standing at the head of the table after everyone else had sat down.
“You’ll ruin hundreds of employees,” he said to Vivienne.
“No.”
She opened the folder Victor had prepared.
“Sterling Ridge Capital will provide temporary operating funds under independent management. Payroll clears Friday. No employee loses health coverage because you committed fraud.”
Dominic stared at her.
“You planned that overnight?”
“I spent years making myself smaller so you could feel powerful. It turns out I can make decisions quickly when I stop protecting you.”
Security entered the room.
Dominic’s expression hardened.
“You think Sophia will thank you for taking away her father?”
Vivienne stepped closer.
“I didn’t take you away. I stopped you from using her as proof that you were a good man.”
He was escorted from the conference room.
In the lobby below, reporters had gathered after rumors of the failed merger spread. Cameras turned when Dominic appeared.
He lifted one hand to block his face.
Vivienne followed several minutes later.
A reporter shouted, “Mrs. Sterling, did your family destroy Vale Meridian?”
Vivienne stopped.
“No,” she said. “We protected it from the people who were stealing from it.”
Another reporter asked about Dominic’s second family.
Vivienne looked toward Meredith and Owen, who were leaving through a side entrance.
May you like
“There was no second family. There were two women and two children who were lied to by the same man.”
Then she walked away before anyone could turn their pain into entertainment.
