Chapter 8 - HE CAME TO MY DELIVERY ROOM

The contractions started for real two weeks later.

I was in my old bedroom at Dad’s house, trying to read, when a pain wrapped around my back and stole my breath. By the time we got to Northwestern, they were five minutes apart.

The doctors told me stress had likely pushed my body too far. My daughter was early, but they were optimistic.

Dad stayed beside me through intake, epidural questions, and every shaky minute I tried not to panic.

“Just breathe,” he said.

“You sound like a drill sergeant.”

“I was trying for warm fatherly support.”

“You missed.”

That tiny joke was the last normal moment of the day.

An hour later, while a nurse adjusted the monitor, shouting broke out in the hallway.

Dad was already at the door before security reached it.

Ryan’s voice punched through first.

“That is my wife in there!”

Then Linda’s.

“She’s in labor with our grandchild and you people are keeping family away!”

Dad stepped into the doorway, filling it.

I couldn’t see Ryan from the bed, but I heard the hate in his voice.

“You did this,” he snapped. “You turned her against me.”

Dad didn’t raise his voice.

“No. You did that yourself.”

Hospital security moved in, and behind them came Detective Alvarez with two uniformed officers. Ryan had violated the protective order by entering the maternity floor.

Linda saw the police and lost the careful grieving-mother act she had worn for weeks.

“This is absurd,” she hissed. “If Emily would just sign the trust release, this would all be over.”

The hallway went dead silent.

Even Ryan turned to stare at her.

Alvarez looked almost pleased. “Ma’am, would you like to repeat that?”

Linda’s face drained.

Ryan grabbed her arm. “Mom, stop talking.”

But she was already unraveling.

“You ruined this the same way you ruined it with Hannah,” she snapped at him. “You always hit too hard too soon.”

The words landed like a bomb.

One of the nurses gasped.

Ryan let go of her like he’d been burned.

Dad didn’t move. He didn’t need to. The damage was done.

Alvarez nodded once to the officers.

“Take them.”

Ryan started shouting as they cuffed him, still trying to twist himself back toward my room.

“Emily! Tell them she’s lying!”

I looked at him through the crack in the door and felt nothing but distance.

Then a contraction hit so hard I gripped the rail and cried out.

Dad turned back instantly, all his fury folding into concern.

“I’m here,” he said, coming to my side.

Two hours later, with my father holding one hand and a nurse coaching me through the other, my daughter came into the world screaming.

It was the most beautiful sound I had ever heard.
