Chapter 4 - The Moment Their Power Ended

Thomas stopped recording and made three calls.
The first was to his attorney.
The second was to the family therapist who had documented the children’s histories and Thomas’s guardianship.
The third was to his bank.
Helen watched him with growing panic. “You’re being vindictive.”
Thomas put the phone back in his pocket. “I’m being responsible.”
Robert stepped closer. “You walk out now, and you are finished with this family.”
Thomas almost laughed.
For years, those words would have crushed him. He had spent half his life trying to earn affection from two people who treated obedience as love. He had paid their bills, absorbed their insults, and brought his children to gatherings where they were examined like evidence of his failures.
But Jacob was still clutching his shirt.
Samuel’s breathing had finally begun to slow.
Rebecca was standing straighter.
Thomas looked at the guests.
“You all heard the recording. Anyone who’s willing to provide a statement can give Tyler your contact information. Anyone who thinks this was acceptable should stay away from my children.”
Aunt Linda lowered her eyes.
“I didn’t know,” she whispered.
“You never asked.”
The words landed harder than shouting would have.
Luis and two servers began removing the unused food and equipment. Helen stared at them.
“What are you doing?”
Luis folded a tablecloth. “The person who hired us ended the event.”
“You can’t take my birthday party.”
Thomas looked at the towering cake, the flowers, the white canopy, and the relatives now avoiding Helen’s eyes.
“I paid for a celebration,” he said. “Not a custody trap.”
Helen’s face twisted. “After everything I’ve done for you, you would humiliate me on my birthday?”
Rebecca stepped out from behind Thomas.
Her voice shook, but every person heard it.
“You made me serve cake while I was crying.”
Helen opened her mouth.
Rebecca continued.
“You told me Dad didn’t really want Samuel and Jacob. You said he only kept them because people called him a hero.”
Thomas felt something inside him tear open.
He turned to Samuel. The boy stared at the ground.
“Did she say that to you too?”
Samuel nodded.
“She said Rebecca was your real kid.”
Jacob began to cry silently.
Thomas pulled all three children into his arms.
“No one is more real than anyone else,” he told them. “Do you understand me? You are mine because I chose every day to be your father.”
Robert muttered, “This emotional nonsense is why they’re weak.”
Thomas released the children and faced him.
“No. They’re strong because they survived people like you.”
Robert raised his hand, not quite a fist, not quite a threat.
Thomas did not move.
Tyler lifted his phone again.
May you like
Robert saw it and slowly lowered his arm.
That was the exact moment his power ended.
