Chapter 7 - THE FILE CREATED BEFORE THE PROPOSAL
Northlight’s controller found the document while reviewing correspondence Marcus had received legitimately during discussions about the joint venue idea.
It was not on a hacked computer.
It had been emailed to him accidentally months earlier by Whitmore Hospitality’s finance director, who copied Danielle on an attachment chain and later recalled it.
Danielle had ignored the file because the subject line referred to “venue synergies.”
Now Leah opened it.
Proposed WHG / Northlight Combination Scenarios.
Created March 22.
Marcus proposed to Danielle May 6.
The file contained three scenarios.
One: ordinary vendor partnership.
Two: minority investment.
Three:
Post-marital consolidation with Northlight assets supporting senior restructuring.
Danielle stared.
“What does that mean in normal English?”
Leah answered:
“Someone was modeling a future in which your company’s balance sheet helped Whitmore refinance.”
“Without asking me.”
“It’s a model. Models aren’t contracts.”
“I know.”
The distinction mattered.
Then Megan pointed at a note in the margin.
M. expects control influence after marriage; formal ownership can follow later.
Danielle read it again.
Control influence.
Marcus did not believe marriage magically transferred Northlight.
He believed marriage would make Danielle easier to influence.
That was worse.
Another note:
C. remains blocking issue.
Clara.
The three pieces aligned.
Clara refused new secured debt.
Whitmore needed another source of strength.
Danielle owned a profitable company.
Marcus proposed six weeks after the model was created.
It still did not prove he had proposed only for money.
People could love someone and exploit them at the same time.
Danielle almost wished motives were cleaner.
Megan asked:
“What are you going to do?”
Danielle looked at the engagement ring.
For two days she had been wearing it on her right hand because taking it off felt too final.
Now she removed it.
She placed it inside her desk drawer.
“Tomorrow I cancel the wedding.”
Megan nodded.
“And Northlight?”
“We notify our bank that nobody outside current officers can represent the company.”
“That may spook them.”
“I know.”
“We’re negotiating our warehouse expansion.”
“I know.”
“If the bank hears someone was using our financials in another company’s projections—”
“They need to hear it from us.”
Megan looked at her for several seconds.
Then smiled faintly.
“What?”
“That sounded like you again.”
Danielle did not feel like herself.
But she made the decision anyway.

The next morning she would spend money, embarrass herself publicly and possibly complicate Northlight’s credit discussions.
For the first time since meeting Marcus, she would choose uncertainty over a comfortable lie.
