Chapter 8 - The Drawer Opens

Margaret tried to recover the room.

She had done it all her life.

A lifted chin. A wounded expression. A voice touched with insulted elegance.

“This is absurd,” she said. “My employee is having an emotional episode.”

Rosa did not blink.

“I’m not your employee anymore.”

Margaret’s eyes narrowed.

Rosa reached into the pocket of her uniform and pulled out a folded page.

“This was in the laundry room.”

Margaret’s face lost color.

Ethan stepped forward. “What is that?”

Rosa handed it to him.

He read the title first.

Prenatal Emotional Fitness Evaluation.

Then his eyes moved down the page.

Unstable.

Resistant.

Temporary guardianship.

Use witnesses.

The room seemed to tilt.

Ethan looked up slowly. “What is this?”

Margaret’s mouth opened, but no answer came quickly enough.

Isabella was sitting now, helped into a chair by one of the quieter women at the table. Her hands trembled over her belly, tears running silently down her face.

Ethan looked at the page again.

“My signature is on this.”

Margaret found her voice. “It was preliminary.”

“I didn’t sign this.”

“Ethan—”

“I didn’t sign this.”

The second time, his voice was no longer confused.

It was cold.

Rosa pulled out her phone.

“I copied the rest,” she said. “The trust draft. The attorney note. The emergency contact changes. All of it.”

Elaine whispered, “Margaret…”

Margaret shot her a look so vicious the woman went silent.

The retired judge at the table cleared his throat. “Mrs. Whitmore, if those documents are authentic, this is a serious matter.”

Margaret snapped, “Stay out of family business.”

And that was her mistake.

Because the judge leaned back slowly and said, “You invited me to witness family business.”

The room turned against her all at once.

Not because they loved Isabella.

Not because they respected Rosa.

Because Margaret had miscalculated the one thing rich people fear more than cruelty.

Exposure.

Ethan crossed the room to Isabella.

He knelt beside her chair, shame breaking across his face.

“Bella,” he whispered. “I’m sorry.”

She looked at him for a long moment.

Then she said, “Sorry doesn’t protect us.”

His jaw tightened.

For the first time that night, Ethan stood without looking at his mother for permission.
