Chapter 9 - WHEN PRIVATE CRUELTY FOUND WITNESSES

The temporary order changed how everyone behaved.

Mom stopped calling me directly.

She communicated through her attorney.

Rachel’s medical records were reviewed with her consent.

The pediatrician documented Lily’s condition after the incident.

The pharmacy confirmed Rachel had filled every prescription normally.

The black handbag and medication remained evidence.

Nothing happened instantly.

There was no dramatic arrest.

No officer appeared at Mom’s door while the family watched.

Real consequences were slower.

Paperwork.

Interviews.

Statements.

Dates.

Questions asked twice.

Meanwhile, Mom fought somewhere else.

Inside the family.

She told relatives Rachel had postpartum psychosis.

Rachel did not.

She claimed I had kicked her across the room.

I had pulled her away from Lily and shoved her back when she lunged toward us.

I had not kicked her.

She said the medications had been placed in her bag accidentally.

Three separate bottles.

From different refill dates.

I stopped answering family messages.

Rachel did not.

That surprised me.

She responded once in the family group chat.

Only once.

“Marlene had prescription medication belonging to me in her handbag. Ethan found it after witnessing her physically restraining Lily. We are following medical and legal advice. I won’t debate my health with people who are not my doctors.”

Then she left the chat.

Mom’s sister Susan called her twenty minutes later.

Not to argue.

To apologize.

That mattered.

Kyle took longer.

He came to see me at work.

We stood beside my truck during lunch.

“You really think she did all this on purpose?”

“I know she took the medication on purpose.”

“Why?”

“That’s what I’m trying to understand.”

Kyle kicked gravel with his boot.

“She called me after Dad died almost every night.”

“I know.”

“She said if we got married and had kids, she’d have nobody.”

I looked at him.

Mom had never told me that.

Kyle continued.

“When Lily was born, she said she finally had a family again.”

There was the motive.

Not a good one.

Not an excuse.

But something human enough to be dangerous.

Mom had not wanted Rachel dead.

She wanted Rachel displaced.

Weak.

Hospitalized.

Dependent.

Anything that would create an empty space beside me she could fill.

And I suddenly understood why she had been willing to frighten Lily.

May you like

The baby had never been the person she was trying to control.

Lily was the prize.
