Chapter 4 - The Mother Who Had Been Watching

Judith Callahan opened the door before Claire could knock.

Without makeup and pearls, she looked ten years older than she had at the courthouse.

“Come inside,” she whispered.

Daniel entered first and checked the darkened foyer.

“Where is Mason?”

“He thinks I’m at my sister’s.”

Judith led them into her late husband’s study. Three monitors glowed on the desk. One displayed folders from the nursery camera archive.

Claire stopped in the doorway.

“You had access.”

Judith nodded.

“I bought the camera.”

“Mason said he bought it.”

“I gave it to him before the baby shower. He installed it under his own account, but I kept the administrator login.”

Daniel’s expression hardened. “Why?”

Judith sat down slowly.

“Because I suspected what he was doing to you.”

Claire stared at her.

“You saw my bruises.”

“Yes.”

“You asked whether I felt safe.”

“I did.”

“Then every time I almost told you, you walked away.”

Judith’s eyes filled with tears. “Because he was listening.”

She opened a desk drawer and removed a small recording device.

“Mason put trackers in your car and software on your phone. He recorded calls inside your house. The first time I asked you directly, he confronted me that evening.”

“What did he say?”

Judith looked toward Daniel.

“He said if I interfered, I would never meet my grandson. Then he reminded me what happened to his father.”

Daniel leaned forward. “What happened to his father?”

Judith’s hands shook.

“My husband abused me for twenty-seven years.”

The room became silent.

“Mason grew up watching it,” she continued. “He used to stand between us when he was little. I told myself that meant he would become different.”

“But he became him,” Claire said.

Judith nodded.

“And I became the woman who protected the family name.”

Claire remembered every cold glance and every dinner where Judith had dismissed Mason’s temper.

“At the hospital, you said you believed him.”

“He had someone watching me.”

“You humiliated me in front of my father.”

“I know.”

“You could have told the detective.”

“I was afraid.”

Claire’s voice sharpened. “So was I.”

Judith flinched.

Daniel stepped closer to his daughter, but Claire did not look away.

“You knew what it was like,” she said. “You knew how he made me doubt myself, and you still left me alone with him.”

Judith began to cry.

“There is no excuse for that.”

The answer took some of Claire’s anger with it. She had expected denial.

Judith inserted an external drive into the computer.

“After I saw the first recording of him grabbing you, I began copying everything. I told myself I was building evidence. The truth is, I kept waiting for someone braver to use it.”

Folders opened across the screen.

Months of footage.

Mason blocking doorways. Mason taking Claire’s phone. Mason forcing her to repeat apologies. Mason telling her that Daniel had called her weak.

Claire covered her mouth.

“My father never said that.”

“No,” Judith replied. “Mason rejected Daniel’s calls from your phone. Sometimes he answered your messages himself.”

The twist struck harder than Claire expected.

Her father had not abandoned her.

Mason had manufactured the distance between them one deleted message at a time.

Daniel turned away, wiping his face.

Judith opened another file.

Mason’s voice filled the study.

“Once she has the baby, I’ll have her declared unstable. I’ll keep the house and make sure Daniel never sees the kid.”

Another voice answered.

Evan’s.

“And what do you need me to say?”

Claire sat down.

Her own brother had not merely believed Mason’s lie.

He had helped create it.

Judith placed a hand near Claire’s but did not touch her.

“There’s more.”

The final recording had been captured the morning after the attack. Mason stood alone in the nursery, speaking to someone on the phone.

“Delete the archive,” he said. “The clip she sent won’t hold up without the original. By the time the baby comes, she’ll have nowhere to go.”

A floorboard creaked in the hallway.

Daniel immediately killed the monitor.

Judith went pale.

Headlights swept across the front windows.

A car door slammed.

Claire’s phone began ringing.

Mason.

Then his voice came from the foyer.

“Mom?”

Judith looked at Claire with naked terror.

Daniel moved toward the study door.

Claire stopped him.

“No.”

“Claire—”

“He wants you angry. He knows what to do with angry.”

She took the external drive from the computer and handed it to her father.

Then she faced the doorway.

“Let him talk.”
