Chapter 12 - HE PULLED THE TUBE

Derek yanked the oxygen tube from beneath Holly’s nose.

“She’s lived long enough,” he said coldly. “We are not wasting money and effort on a child who’s fading anyway.”

Holly gasped.

The monitor alarmed as her oxygen level began dropping.

Vanessa caught Derek’s arm but did not pull him away.

For one stunned second, Marissa saw all three of them as they truly were.

Derek was not an overwhelmed father making an impossible medical decision. He was a frightened man destroying whatever stood between him and escape.

Vanessa was not merely a deceived lover. She had helped build the lie and was still hesitating when stopping him required more than regret.

Holly was not a diagnosis, a trust, or evidence.

She was an eight-year-old girl trying to breathe.

Marissa lunged.

She shoved Derek away from the bed, seized the tube, and pressed it back beneath Holly’s nose.

“Touch her again,” Marissa said, “and I’ll bury you before this hospital does.”

Derek struck the chair and stumbled backward.

The nurse hit the emergency call button and moved between him and the bed.

Vanessa stepped forward, one hand over her belly.

“Derek, stop,” she said shakily. “This is not how our son’s future begins.”

Marissa stared at her.

“Our son,” Derek repeated bitterly. “You think you still have a future after giving them my files?”

Vanessa’s mouth opened, then closed.

A respiratory therapist rushed in and checked Holly’s oxygen. Dr. Patel followed with two security officers.

Derek raised both hands.

“It slipped. Marissa attacked me.”

The nurse answered before anyone else.

“I watched you remove it.”

Derek’s face changed.

Marissa grabbed her phone from the bedside table and called Calvin.

He answered immediately.

“Begin now,” she said. “He just tried to kill Holly for her trust.”

Derek turned pale.

Calvin’s voice came through the speaker.

“The audit has been filed. All remaining trust accounts are frozen except direct verified medical payments. The financial referral cannot be withdrawn.”

Security moved toward Derek.

He looked at Marissa, then Vanessa, searching for the person most likely to rescue him.

Neither woman moved.

As officers escorted him from the room, he called back to Holly.

“Daddy didn’t mean—”

Holly turned her face toward the wall.

The gesture hurt him more visibly than the security officer’s hand on his arm.

Dr. Patel stabilized Holly within minutes. The interruption had been brief, but the incident became part of her medical record, the nurse’s report, the security log, and the hospital’s preserved monitor data.

Derek could argue about money.

He could dispute signatures.

He could call the removal accidental.

He could not erase the people who had watched him choose the audit over his daughter’s breath.
