Chapter 1 - The Envelope They Tried to Take

Preston already had one hand twisted into Sebastian’s suit jacket when Elisa realized this was no longer an argument.

His other hand was reaching for the old envelope.

“Give that to me.”

Sebastian didn’t answer.

Warm afternoon light poured through the tall ballroom windows behind them, catching the white flowers wrapped around the wedding arch and the polished marble beneath their feet. A few yards away, trays of pastries and cream-filled desserts sat untouched on a rolling cart.

Elisa stood directly behind her husband.

She had seen Preston angry before. She had seen him bully accountants, vendors, even their father during the last ugly year of his life.

She had never seen her brother look desperate.

Sebastian glanced down at Preston’s fist gripping his jacket.

Then he looked directly at him.

One violent movement changed everything.

Sebastian tore himself free and drove a single punch across Preston’s jaw.

Preston’s body spun backward.

He hit the flower-covered wedding arch with his full weight.

The wooden lattice cracked straight through the middle.

Garlands ripped loose. Decorative branches folded inward. White petals sprayed across the marble as Preston disappeared under a collapsing mess of wood and flowers.

Through all of it, Sebastian never released the envelope.

Then Lucinda moved.

Elisa barely had time to understand that her sister was charging Sebastian before Lucinda reached for his arm—and for the envelope in his hand.

Sebastian caught her.

He turned Lucinda’s body away from Elisa and slapped her once, hard enough to send her sideways.

Lucinda crashed into the dessert cart.

Metal wheels skipped across marble.

The cart overturned with her.

Plates broke. Pastries rolled under chairs. White cream smeared across the floor while silver serving utensils scattered in every direction.

Sebastian immediately stepped back in front of Elisa.

The envelope remained in his hand.

His breathing was heavy, but his voice was controlled when he looked down at Lucinda.

“You weren’t protecting the vase. You were protecting what was inside it.”

Lucinda’s anger disappeared.

Not slowly.

Instantly.

Sebastian turned the envelope over.

A faded burgundy wax seal covered the back flap.

Pressed into it was the old Caradonna family mark—three narrow cypress trees inside an oval border, the same mark Elisa remembered from her father’s desk when she was a child.

Lucinda stared at it as though she recognized exactly what it was.

Under the broken wedding arch, Preston had pushed enough flowers away to see it too.

His reaction was different.

Lucinda looked frightened by what might be inside.

Preston looked frightened that it existed at all.

Elisa noticed the difference.

And for the first time in six years, she wondered whether the financial scandal that had driven her out of her family’s company had begun long before anyone had blamed her.
