Chapter 11 - THE PEOPLE WHO EXPECTED RACHEL TO SAVE THEM
Relatives began visiting Rachel after the sale proposal circulated.
Uncle Paul apologized for remaining silent at the barbecue, then asked whether she could prevent Marcus from losing his house.
Jenna said she supported Rachel, then admitted she could not repay Marcus immediately if his finances collapsed.
Linda wanted the store sold but begged Rachel not to pursue criminal charges over the forged guarantee.
Everyone agreed Marcus had crossed a line.
Everyone hoped Rachel would absorb the consequences.
Daniel listened from the hallway during one conversation.
After the relatives left, he asked, “Why do they keep asking you to help him?”
“Because helping him is what our family is used to.”
“He didn’t help me.”
“No.”
“He made me get down like a dog.”
Rachel sat beside him on the couch.
“I can make choices that protect other people without pretending what he did was acceptable.”
Daniel did not respond.
His therapist had encouraged Rachel to let him express anger without rushing him toward forgiveness.
At school, he had begun eating lunch again, but only after placing one unopened snack in his backpack.
Rachel no longer removed it.
The bank confirmed that the electronic guarantee could be referred for criminal investigation. Elise explained that prosecution decisions would not belong to Rachel, but her cooperation would matter.
Rachel hesitated.
She disliked the satisfaction relatives imagined she would feel if Marcus were arrested. She wanted accurate records, financial accountability and permanent distance from her son.
She also knew ignoring forgery because the offender was family would repeat Linda’s mistake.
Rachel provided the evidence.
When Marcus learned, he called from an unfamiliar number.
“You’re sending police after me?”
“I’m telling the truth about my signature.”
“You could’ve handled this inside the family.”
“You put my child on the ground in front of the family.”
“That was one minute.”
“For Daniel, it’s every meal since.”
Marcus went quiet.
Then he said, “I didn’t know he’d carry it like that.”
Rachel nearly answered with anger.
Instead, she said, “You knew he was seven.”
She blocked the number.
The next day, the county prosecutor requested an interview with Linda.
Linda blamed Rachel for forcing an elderly mother to testify against her son.
