Chapter 1 - The Door Claire Wasn’t Allowed to Reach

Ryan already had Claire by the forearm when Daniel opened the front door.
Claire was seven months pregnant, barefoot, one hand wrapped protectively beneath her belly while Ryan dragged her backward across the cream rug.
Her purse lay near the foyer.
She had almost reached it.
“You’re nothing without me,” Ryan said.
Claire twisted against his grip.
“Let go.”
Diane stood directly in front of the door.
She looked almost serene in her pearl blouse and tailored beige pants.
Then she kicked Claire’s purse across the marble.
“Ryan finally taught you respect.”
Claire stared at her.
That hurt differently.
Ryan’s anger had been building for weeks.
Diane’s cruelty was deliberate.
Measured.
She had watched Claire try to leave and decided to help trap her.
Then the front door opened.
Daniel Reed filled the doorway.
Claire had texted him seventeen minutes earlier.
COME GET ME.
Nothing else.
Daniel saw Ryan’s hand around his sister’s arm.
His expression changed.
He moved immediately.
One arm between them.
One hard shove of Ryan’s reaching hand away.
Then Daniel placed himself in front of Claire.
“Touch her again.”
Ryan stepped back.
“You don’t know what’s happening.”
“I know enough.”
Diane made an impatient sound.
“This is a marital argument.”
Claire’s voice shook.
“No. It isn’t.”
She moved behind Daniel.
Ryan looked toward her belly.
For one second, guilt appeared.
Then Diane opened her handbag.
She pulled out a deep-burgundy property folder and slammed it onto the living-room table.
“This house belongs to my son.”
Claire almost laughed.
The house had been hers before the marriage.
At least she thought it had.
Diane opened the folder and stabbed one manicured finger at Ryan’s signature.
“He signed the ownership agreement.”
Ryan straightened.
Some of his arrogance returned.
“Tell your brother to leave.”
Daniel picked up the folder.
“Daniel,” Diane snapped.
He ignored her.
The first page referenced the $142,000 Diane had contributed toward the renovation three years earlier.
Ryan’s signature appeared at the bottom.
Daniel turned the page.
His anger disappeared.
He read it again.
Then looked at Ryan.
“You never read page two.”
Ryan frowned.
“What?”
Diane moved toward Daniel.
“Give me that.”
Daniel stepped away.
Claire saw the heading.
ACKNOWLEDGMENT OF NON-TITLE SPOUSE.
Her breathing changed.
Daniel read aloud:
“Ryan Morgan acknowledges that title to the property remains solely vested in Claire Reed Morgan…”
Ryan’s face emptied.
Claire stared at him.
Daniel continued.
“…and that funds advanced by Diane Morgan constitute a personal loan to Ryan Morgan only, creating no ownership interest in the residence absent a separately executed agreement by the titleholder.”
Silence.
Claire looked at Diane.
“You knew.”
Diane’s jaw tightened.
Ryan turned toward his mother.
“You told me this made me part owner.”
Diane looked at Claire instead.
“The renovations increased the value of this house.”
“That isn’t what I asked.”
Ryan picked up page two.
His hands began to shake.
Claire had spent months believing Ryan’s control came from entitlement.
Now she saw something more complicated.
Ryan had been lied to too.
But then she looked at the red mark forming around her forearm.
Being deceived did not explain why he had put his hands on her.
And whatever page two meant, Diane had been keeping it close enough to carry into a family fight.
Claire looked at Daniel.
“Take me out of here.”
Diane blocked the doorway again.
May you like
Daniel stared at her.
This time Diane moved on her own.
