Chapter 1 - THE HAND ON THE SWITCH

Noah’s palm struck Ethan Walker’s wrist before Ethan could press the bedside call switch.
“Don’t touch that.”
The boy’s voice was low, almost cold. He stood at the left side of Olivia’s hospital bed in a gray hoodie, his messy brown hair damp from the Seattle rain. He couldn’t have been older than ten, but he held Ethan’s stare without blinking.
Ethan pulled his arm free. “She’s already gone.”
Behind them, the heart monitor continued its steady rhythm. Blue afternoon light filtered through the blinds of Room 512, flattening Olivia’s face against the white pillow. At twelve, she still looked close to the nine-year-old girl Ethan remembered from before the crash.
Only longer. Thinner. Silent.
The respiratory team was waiting down the hall. Ethan had signed the forms that morning. The call switch would tell them he was ready.
Noah ignored him and wrapped both hands around Olivia’s right hand.
“Watch her fingers.”
Ethan almost ordered him out. Then the waveform on the monitor changed.
Not dramatically. One beat came faster, followed by another. Noah pressed his thumb against Olivia’s knuckle.
Her index finger moved.
Ethan leaned over the bed so quickly his hip struck the rail. “Do that again.”
Noah didn’t look at him. “Liv, it’s me. Two taps if you can hear me.”
Nothing happened.
Ethan’s breath left him in a bitter laugh. “You don’t get to come in here and—”
Olivia’s finger twitched again.
Then her hand curled weakly around Noah’s.
Ethan stared at the boy’s face. There was something familiar in the set of his mouth, something he couldn’t place beneath three years of anger and exhaustion.
“Who are you?”
Noah finally turned.
“Noah Walker.”
The last name landed harder than the slap to Ethan’s wrist.
“My mom is Lena,” the boy said. “She’s downstairs because she thinks you’ll throw her out.”
Ethan stepped back from the bed.
Lena was his younger sister.
The woman he had not spoken to since the crash. The woman he had accused, in front of two hundred people at his wife’s funeral, of killing Sarah and leaving Olivia trapped inside her own body.

Noah tightened his grip around Olivia’s hand.
“My mom said I had to stop you,” he said. “She said Olivia might be the only person left who can prove what really happened.”
