Chapter 4 - The Afternoon Everything Broke

Emily should have called Daniel immediately.
Instead, she stood between Margaret and the staircase.
It was not brave in the way movies make bravery look.
There was no speech.
No dramatic threat.
Just Emily, exhausted and shaking, saying, “You need to leave.”
Margaret’s face stayed calm.
“You’re confused.”
“I’m not.”
“You’re emotional.”
“No.”
Margaret stepped closer.
“You have no idea what this family has survived.”
Emily felt her pulse in her throat. “I know what it’s stolen.”
The words changed the air.
Margaret’s mask slipped for half a second.
Then she moved past Emily toward the stairs.
Emily reached for the banister, blocking her path.
“I said leave.”
Margaret grabbed her wrist.
Not hard enough to look violent to someone watching from far away.
Hard enough for Emily to understand what kind of woman she was alone with.
“Let go of me,” Emily said.
Margaret leaned close.
“You think Daniel will choose you over me?”
Emily’s voice broke. “He should never have to choose between his wife and the truth.”
Margaret twisted away, trying to push past her.
Emily lost balance on the lower stair.
The fall was not long.
It did not need to be.
Her hip hit the edge of the step. Her legs struck the side of the wooden bench beneath the staircase. Pain shot through her so sharply she couldn’t make sound at first.
Margaret froze above her.
For one second, fear flashed across her face.
Then calculation replaced it.
Emily tried to sit up, trembling.
Margaret walked down slowly and looked at the bruising already forming across Emily’s legs.
“You fell,” she said.
Emily stared at her.
“No.”
Margaret crouched just enough to speak quietly.
“You fell because you were upset. Because you’ve been unstable. Because you’ve been obsessing over things that aren’t your concern.”
Emily reached for her phone on the floor.
Margaret picked it up first.
“Daniel doesn’t need this tonight.”
“You can’t do this,” Emily whispered.
Margaret put the phone into her coat pocket.
“I already am.”
By the time the pain became unbearable, Margaret was the one who called for help.
She stood in the doorway when the paramedics arrived, cream coat spotless, voice shaking with perfect concern.
“She’s been under so much stress,” Margaret told them. “I turned around and she was on the floor.”
Emily tried to speak.
Margaret placed a hand over her shoulder and squeezed.

To everyone else, it looked comforting.
To Emily, it was a warning.
