CHAPTER 10

By evening, Vanessa was gone.
Not dramatically.
Not with a final speech.
Just two suitcases, a pale face, and Daniel standing by the front door while Michael held Lily upstairs.
The police report was filed.
The footage was saved.
The locks were changed before sunrise.
For the next few days, Lily barely spoke.
Michael did not force her.
He made pancakes. He sat on the floor. He let her sleep with the hallway light on. He answered every midnight whisper with the same words.
“You are safe. I believe you. I’m not leaving.”
One morning, Lily walked into the kitchen wearing her yellow T-shirt and denim overalls.
The silver dog bowl was gone.
Michael had thrown it away himself.
At the table sat a plate of warm toast, scrambled eggs, strawberries, and a small glass of milk.
Lily stared at it.
Then at Michael.
“Can I sit in the big chair?”
Michael pulled it out for her.
“It’s your chair.”
She climbed up slowly.
For a moment, she just touched the plate with one tiny finger, like she needed to make sure it was real.
Then she looked at him.
“Daddy?”
“Yeah, baby?”
“Mommy wouldn’t be ashamed of me?”
Michael’s throat tightened.
He knelt beside her chair.
“No,” he said. “Your mommy would be proud of how brave you were.”
Lily’s eyes filled with tears again.
But this time, she smiled.
Michael kissed the top of her blonde head and stayed beside her while she ate.
The mansion was still too big.
The marble still too cold.
The kitchen still too bright.
May you like
But for the first time in months, Lily did not eat in fear.
And Michael promised himself that no one would ever make his daughter apologize for needing love again.
