Chapter 1 - What I Found Beside My Son’s Crib

I heard Emily crying before I opened the nursery door.
Not the exhausted, frustrated crying I had heard during those first sleepless weeks with a newborn.
This was fear.
I pushed the door open.
My mother had Emily by the hair.
Margaret was forcing my wife against the side of Noah’s crib while our newborn cried safely beneath his star-patterned quilt.
“You’ll answer for humiliating me!”
For one second, my brain refused to understand what my eyes were seeing.
Then Emily saw me.
“Daniel, please!”
I crossed the room.
“DON’T TOUCH HER!”
I grabbed my mother by the shoulders and pulled her away.
Margaret stumbled backward into the wardrobe.
Emily dropped beside the crib and immediately reached for Noah.
I stood between them.
My mother straightened her burgundy cardigan.
Then, with unbelievable calm, she said:
“She was turning you against me.”
I stared at her.
“Get out.”
“Daniel—”
“Now.”
Then I noticed what she was holding.
A torn hospital bracelet.
Emily’s.
The one she had still been wearing after being discharged with Noah two days earlier.
I looked from the bracelet to my wife.
Emily’s face changed.
She looked terrified.
Not embarrassed.
Not confused.
Terrified.
“What did you do before I came in?”
Margaret immediately moved the bracelet behind her back.
That was when I knew the violence in the nursery had not started when I opened the door.
Emily whispered:
“She took my phone.”
I turned.
“What?”
Margaret snapped, “Because she was hysterical.”
Emily clutched Noah closer.
“She wouldn’t let me call you.”
My stomach dropped.
“Why?”
Emily looked at my mother.
Then at me.
“Because I found out what she’s been telling you.”
I slowly faced Margaret.
“What has she been telling me?”
Emily’s mouth trembled.
“That you think I’m failing Noah.”
I stared at my wife.
“I never said that.”
May you like
Emily closed her eyes.
Behind me, my mother went completely still.
