HELEN SIGNS NOTHING

By evening, the Grand Marlowe lobby had been cleaned.
The suitcase was gone.
The private event was canceled.
Vivian left through a side entrance with her mother, no ring on her hand, no goodbye for Ethan. Helen watched from a quiet corner near the tea lounge as the young woman paused before leaving and looked back.
“I hope you take everything back,” Vivian said.
Helen answered honestly.
“I hope you do too.”
Robert arranged for Helen to stay in the penthouse suite that had once belonged to Arthur. She almost refused, but then she remembered Ethan had lived there while telling people she was dead.
So she accepted.
That night, Helen stood by the window overlooking the city lights. Her blue dress hung over a chair. Her wrist was wrapped. Her reflection in the glass looked tired, but not broken.
Robert knocked once before entering.
“I brought tea,” he said.
Helen smiled faintly. “Arthur would say you made it too strong.”
“Arthur drank colored water and called it tea.”
For the first time all day, Helen laughed.
Then the silence returned.
Robert set the tray down.
“I should have tried harder,” he said.
Helen shook her head. “I should have listened.”
“He isolated you.”
“I let him.”
“No,” Robert said firmly. “You trusted your husband. That is not a crime.”
Helen looked at him.
There it was again.
Husband.
The word no longer felt romantic. It felt like a door she had locked herself behind.
“What happens now?” she asked.
Robert handed her a folder.
Not forcefully.
Not like Ethan had.
He placed it within reach and waited.
“Temporary legal protection. Freeze on share transfers. Emergency board meeting tomorrow. You sign nothing tonight.”
Helen touched the folder but did not open it.
Sign nothing.
For months, Ethan had handed her papers with smiles, kisses, pressure, explanations. For months, she had signed because love, embarrassment, and fear made her obedient.
Tonight, no one pushed a pen into her hand.
That was how she knew she was free.
Helen looked out at the city.
“Tomorrow,” she said, “I want to walk through the lobby again.”
May you like
Robert nodded.
“This time, everyone will know your name.”
