"He had ignored his mother's calls for weeks, then returned home and found the reason she couldn't sleep."

Michael Whitmore saw the bowl before he understood the cruelty.

It was brown ceramic, the same one his mother used to eat soup from when she was too weak to sit at the dining table. Vanessa held it above Evelyn’s chest with both hands, her blue silk robe glowing darkly in the candlelight.

Then she tipped it.

Liquid spilled across Evelyn’s white nightgown and soaked into the bedsheets.

Evelyn gasped so softly it was almost worse than a scream.

Her thin hands clawed at the blanket. Her short white hair trembled against the pillow. She turned her face away like a child expecting more punishment, not a seventy-nine-year-old woman lying helpless in her own bedroom.

Vanessa leaned closer.

“Now maybe you’ll stop calling for him,” she hissed.

Michael froze in the doorway.

For weeks, Vanessa had told him his mother was confused. Paranoid. Angry at everyone. She said Evelyn called for him at night because old age had turned her cruel and demanding.

But there was nothing confused about the terror on his mother’s face.

Evelyn looked up through shaking tears.

“Please,” she whispered. “I just need my son.”

Vanessa’s mouth twisted.

“Your son believes me,” she said. “Not you.”

That was when Evelyn’s eyes shifted past Vanessa’s shoulder.

Vanessa saw it.

Slowly, she turned.

The bowl trembled in her hand.

Michael stepped into the room, candlelight cutting across his face. He wore a dark navy robe, his hair still wet from the rain outside, his expression hollow with shock.

“What did you pour on my mother?” he asked.

Vanessa tried to hide the bowl behind her body.

“Michael,” she said quickly. “She was confused.”

Evelyn reached weakly toward him.

Michael walked to the bed and placed himself between his wife and his mother.

Then he took the bowl from Vanessa’s hand.

The liquid was room-temperature tea.

Harmless to the skin.

Brutal to the soul.

Michael looked at the soaked sheets, then at Vanessa.
