CHAPTER 5

CHAPTER 5
The airport security office was windowless, too bright, and smelled like burnt coffee.
Lily sat on my lap, chewing the ear of her stuffed rabbit while I tried to keep my hands from trembling.
Ryan sat across the room with his lawyer on speakerphone.
Marissa sat beside him, no longer touching his arm.
Noah stood near the door with Daniel, quiet and watchful.
The officer returned with two airport security supervisors and a woman from airline legal.
Her expression was serious.
“Mrs. Collins,” she said, “the document submitted under your name appears to be falsified.”
Ryan shot to his feet.
“This is ridiculous.”
The legal representative did not look at him.
“It includes a physician signature that does not match the clinic’s records. The clinic has confirmed they did not issue this statement.”
My heart pounded so hard I could hear it.
Noah looked at Ryan.
“You forged medical papers to have her detained at the airport.”
Ryan pointed at me.
“She’s my wife. She took my kid across state lines.”
“We are separated,” I said. “And you locked us out of our home.”
His face twisted.
“You were going to take her from me.”
I almost laughed.
Not because it was funny.
Because the truth was so bare now.
“You didn’t want Lily,” I said. “You wanted control.”
Marissa stood slowly.
Ryan turned to her.
“Sit down.”
She did not.
For the first time, she looked directly at me.
“He told me you abandoned the baby for days at a time,” she said quietly. “He said he was trying to rescue Lily.”
I stared at her.
The room went silent.
Ryan’s mouth opened.
Marissa took out her phone.
“But last night, he said if he got custody, you’d sign anything to get her back. The apartment. The savings. Everything.”
Ryan lunged toward her phone.
Daniel caught his wrist before he reached it.
Not hard.
Just enough.
The officer stepped in immediately.
“Sir, sit down now.”
Marissa’s hand shook as she played the recording.
Ryan’s voice filled the room.
Once I have the baby, Emily will crawl. She always does. I don’t need custody forever. I need leverage.
I closed my eyes.
There it was.
The monster, finally speaking in a room full of witnesses.
When I opened my eyes, Noah was looking at me.
Not with pity.
With respect.
The officer turned to Ryan.
“Mr. Collins, we need you to come with us.”
Ryan’s face collapsed.
“This is a misunderstanding.”
No one moved to help him.
As they led him out, he looked back at me.
“You think he cares about you?” he spat, nodding toward Noah. “Men like him don’t save women like you for free.”
The words hit the room like poison.
Noah’s face did not change.
But when he spoke, his voice was colder than I had heard it all day.
“You’re right about one thing. I don’t save people for free.”
Ryan smirked.
May you like
Noah looked at Lily, then at me.
“I do it because once, no one saved my sister.”
