Chapter 12 - WHAT CELESTE WAS ACTUALLY AFRAID TO LOSEThe final disciplinary interview lasted two hours.

Celeste knew termination was possible.

She did not beg.

Amelia asked:

“Why did you kick the medallion?”

Celeste looked confused.

“Why that?”

“Because you could have called security without humiliating me.”

Celeste looked down.

“You looked at me like you knew something I didn’t.”

“I did.”

“I hated it.”

There.

Not security.

Status.

Amelia continued.

“Why Luis?”

“He challenged me in front of staff.”

“Was he wrong?”

“Sometimes.”

“That is not what I asked.”

Celeste exhaled.

“About the tips? Probably not.”

“Then?”

“If I let one department openly reject policy, every manager would think they could.”

“So you needed control.”

“Yes.”

“What were you afraid would happen if you lost it?”

Celeste laughed bitterly.

“I’d become my mother.”

Amelia waited.

“Working twelve-hour shifts while guests act like you don’t exist.”

“You think authority prevented that?”

“It made people look at me.”

“And when they didn’t?”

Celeste’s eyes filled.

“I made them.”

That was the answer.

Celeste had spent her life fleeing invisibility.

She finally reached a position where people had to listen.

Then confused obedience with respect.

The resort’s incentives amplified it.

Her family financial tie to Ward Coastal made the abuse of discretion more serious.

The independent review found no evidence Celeste received direct kickbacks.

But it found undisclosed conflict.

Improper vendor-selection involvement.

Retaliatory indicators in Luis’s termination.

Inconsistent security enforcement.

Failure to preserve tip-distribution records adequately.

And abusive conduct toward Amelia that would have violated policy regardless of ownership.

Enough.

The board terminated her employment for cause under executive policy.

Not because Amelia cracked her badge.

Not because of a medallion.

Because the review produced documented findings.

Celeste listened.

Then asked Amelia:

“Do you feel better?”

Amelia thought.

“No.”

Celeste almost smiled.

“Good.”

Amelia did not hate her.

That surprised both of them.

Understanding why Celeste became cruel did not make keeping her in power safe.

Those were different questions.
