Chapter 3 - The Uniform Margaret Called a Costume

Lauren had a promotion ceremony at Fort Belvoir the next morning.

She considered canceling.

Retired Major General Henry Shaw refused to let her.

Henry had served with Lauren’s father and later became one of Lauren’s mentors. He knew the house, the marriage, and the compromises Lauren had made after Daniel’s injury.

“You don’t surrender your command because someone assaulted you at home,” he said. “You handle both responsibilities.”

Lauren stood before her unit with a bandage visible beneath the sleeve of her dress uniform and accepted command of a joint logistics directorate.

She gave a seven-minute speech.

She did not mention Margaret.

Afterward, Henry accompanied Lauren to Alexandria. Maya met them at the property with a certified copy of the deed, an emergency access order, and two police officers conducting a civil standby and welfare check.

A licensed locksmith waited near the driveway.

Margaret opened the door before anyone knocked.

Her eyes moved from Lauren’s silver eagles to Henry’s retired general insignia, then to the attorney and police officers behind them.

For one unguarded second, she looked confused.

Then contempt returned.

She lunged forward, seized Lauren’s uniform collar, and said, “That costume cannot turn a parasite into someone important.”

Lauren removed Margaret’s hand one finger at a time.

The officers stepped closer.

Lauren placed the recorded deed on the kitchen counter.

“You burned the colonel who legally owns every room you occupied.”

Margaret stared at the document without reading it.

“That house is Daniel’s.”

“No. It was mine before I married him.”

“You’re lying.”

Maya pointed to the county recording stamp. “Mrs. Hale, the court has authorized Ms. Hale to enter her property. The officers are also here to confirm Daniel Hale’s welfare.”

Margaret moved backward.

“He isn’t here.”

“His rehabilitation center says you discharged him eleven days ago,” Lauren replied.

Margaret’s hand rose to her chest.

The brass key was threaded onto a chain beneath her blouse.

The locksmith stepped toward the guest-wing hallway.

Margaret blocked him.

“No one goes back there.”

A heavy scraping sound came from behind the locked interior door.

Then something struck the wall.

Lauren moved forward, but an officer stopped her from pushing past Margaret.

“Ma’am,” he told Margaret, “unlock the door.”

Margaret clutched the hidden key against her chest.

Her arrogance disappeared.

“He gets confused,” she said. “He becomes dangerous.”

Lauren looked at the outside lock mounted above the handle.

The keyhole faced the hallway.

Anyone inside could not unlock it.

“Daniel,” Lauren called.

For several seconds, there was only rough movement.

Then a man’s voice answered from behind the door.

It was weak, but it was Daniel.

“Lauren?”

Margaret closed her eyes.

The officer held out his hand for the key.

May you like

She refused.

The locksmith opened the door without it.
