Chapter 9 - VICTORIA WASN’T AFRAID OF PATERNITY
Victoria’s objection made no sense.
She had spent months acting certain Richard was not Liam’s biological father.
Now she did not want the testing considered.
Avery noticed the contradiction immediately.
“So she doesn’t actually care who your father was.”
Liam looked at the filing.
“She cares about something the result changes.”
Natalie helped them trace it.
The answer was buried in a later trust amendment created after Charles Sterling died.
Richard had restructured much of his personal estate outside the oldest male-line mechanisms.
That estate protected Liam regardless of biology because Richard explicitly named him as his son.
But Julian had done something unexpected before his death.
He created a private charitable remainder structure tied to a large block of Sterling shares.
If Julian died without acknowledged descendants other than Graham, certain voting rights consolidated with Graham.
If another biological child existed, those rights divided.
Victoria had known about the document.
She had never told Liam.
“Why?” Avery asked.
Liam already knew.
“Because if I’m Julian’s son, Graham loses power.”
Avery frowned.
“That should help you.”
“It could destabilize the entire governance structure Dad built.”
There it was again.
Victoria was not protecting Liam’s fortune.
She was protecting a version of Sterling control.
Richard’s structure.
Her late husband’s legacy.
Even if that required keeping Liam uncertain about his own father.
Avery confronted her privately.
“You said we’d lose everything.”
Victoria’s expression tightened.
“I was speaking emotionally.”
“No. You were speaking strategically.”
Victoria looked away.
Avery continued.
“What exactly do you lose if Liam is Julian’s son?”
“Balance.”
“That is not everything.”
“To you.”
Victoria turned.
“Richard spent thirty years containing his brother’s mistakes. If Liam shifts into Julian’s branch legally or financially, Graham will fight him for the rest of his life.”
“And hiding the truth prevents that?”
“It prevented it for thirty-five years.”
Avery stared.
That was Victoria’s definition of success.
A lie that lasted.
Not a family healed.
Not a son informed.
Just conflict postponed until someone else had to pay for it.
The court allowed the DNA report to be considered subject to later evidentiary challenges.
Liam opened it beside Avery.
The probability findings were strong.
Not perfect.
But strong enough to fundamentally alter the family dispute.
