Chapter 4

I did not call Miguel back.

I called the police.

My voice shook so badly the dispatcher asked me twice if I was safe.

“I think I found evidence connected to a missing woman,” I said. “It was hidden inside my mattress.”

Saying it out loud made the room feel colder.

Two detectives arrived within forty minutes.

Detective Harris was a woman in her fifties with tired eyes and a calm voice. Her partner, Detective Cole, barely spoke.

They photographed everything before touching it.

The mattress.

The cut seam.

The plastic bag.

The bracelet.

The papers.

The sealed phone.

Then Detective Harris looked at me.

“Do you know Elena Ramirez?”

I shook my head.

“No. But my husband did.”

She paused.

That pause told me more than words.

“You recognize the name?” I asked.

Harris glanced at Cole.

“Elena Ramirez’s case never fully closed.”

My mouth went dry.

“What happened to her?”

“She disappeared nine years ago after leaving a hotel outside Flagstaff. Her car was found abandoned. No confirmed sighting after that.”

I sat on the edge of the chair near the window.

The room tilted slightly.

Miguel called again.

This time Detective Harris looked at the screen.

“Let it ring.”

It stopped.

Then a text arrived.

Why aren’t you answering?

Another.

Did you go near the mattress?

My blood went cold.

Detective Harris read it without touching the phone.

Her expression changed.

“Mrs. Alvarez,” she said, “I need you to come with us while we secure the house.”

“Is he dangerous?”

She did not answer quickly enough.

That was answer enough.

At the station, they asked me questions for hours.

When did the smell start?

Had Miguel recently moved the mattress?

Had he become protective of it?

Did he ever mention Elena?

Did he travel around the dates on the receipts?

Then they showed me something that made my heart drop.

A scanned copy of an old statement from Elena’s sister.

Elena had been dating a man named Miguel shortly before she vanished.

She had told her sister he was engaged to someone else.

She had said she was scared of him.

My hands went numb.

I had not been the wife after Elena.

I had been the cover story.

The safe woman.

The quiet house.

The clean ending Miguel needed the world to believe.

Detective Harris placed the bracelet photo in front of me.

“Elena’s sister described this bracelet when she filed the report.”

I covered my mouth.

All those years, I thought my marriage was ordinary.

But it had been built on a secret sealed beneath the place where I slept.
