Chapter 9 - THE NECKLACE DANIEL NEEDED MORE THAN CLARA DID
Daniel denied taking it.
Nina advised Clara not to turn the necklace into the center of the divorce. Its value was small compared with the loan disputes.
Then Teresa called.
Daniel had given her the necklace back.
“He said you wanted me to have it.”
Clara closed her eyes.
Of course.
Even now, Daniel was still translating one woman to the other.
“What did you do with it?” Clara asked.
“It’s here.”
“Keep it until my attorney arranges collection.”
Teresa was quiet.
“Clara, I don’t want it.”
“Then give it to Nina.”
“I thought when Daniel returned it that maybe you were trying to make peace.”
“That is exactly why he gave it to you.”
Silence.
Teresa finally understood the necklace had become another message Daniel could manufacture.
She delivered it to Nina’s office herself.
That afternoon Daniel’s employer terminated him.
The compliance review found that he used proprietary lender templates and internal client-data formatting in personal financing packages. No customer money was missing, but his conduct violated firm policy and regulatory standards.
Daniel blamed Clara.
“You could’ve handled this privately.”
“It became your employer’s problem when you used their materials.”
“You wanted me unemployed.”
“I wanted you unable to use my name.”
Without his commissions, Daniel could no longer make Teresa’s loan payments.
The condo sale became unavoidable.
The conflict reached another person: Daniel’s younger brother, Michael, a public-school teacher in Evanston.
Michael had stayed out of everything.
Now he called Clara.
“Mom told me she borrowed the money for you.”
“She borrowed it for Daniel.”
“I know that now.”
Michael sounded tired.
“Do you know why Dad never knew?”
Clara stopped.
Teresa’s husband, Frank, had still been alive when the HELOC opened.
According to every story Clara had heard, Frank left Teresa financially secure before dying of pancreatic cancer.
Michael said Frank had opposed using the condo for Daniel’s investments.
Teresa opened the HELOC while Frank was hospitalized and told him the money was being used for medical modifications to the home and family expenses.
Teresa had lied before Daniel ever invented Clara’s debt.
The secret had another layer.
Daniel had learned financial dishonesty inside a family already using love as justification.
The question changed again.
