Chapter 11 - The Money Could Come Back. The Years Couldn’t.
Daniel asked Clara to meet without attorneys.
She refused.
They met with Melissa and Daniel’s lawyer present.
He looked exhausted enough that Clara could see the man she married beneath the defenses.
“I never wanted to steal from you.”
“You forged my name.”
“My mother did some of that.”
“You gave her the signature.”
“Yes.”
“You let me send money after the debt was gone.”
“Yes.”
“You let me clean her house while she called me ungrateful.”
Daniel closed his eyes.
“Yes.”
The repeated answer was almost worse than an argument.
Clara confronted her own mistake too.
She had tolerated Teresa’s humiliation long before money became suspicious.
She smiled through jokes about her career.
She canceled plans when Teresa demanded help.
She let Daniel call her “too sensitive” whenever she objected because she wanted to be the daughter-in-law nobody could accuse of dividing the family.
Being accommodating had become part of Clara’s identity.
Teresa learned to use it.
Daniel learned to expect it.
The legal process could recover money.
It could not refund the Saturdays.
Daniel’s employer completed part of its investigation and concluded he had used internal equipment for personal financial documents and failed to disclose a significant personal financial conflict relevant to his lending role.
He remained suspended.
No final employment decision had been made.
Teresa’s brokerage firm froze disputed transfers voluntarily after receiving the preservation notice, pending agreement or court direction.
The $84,000 was still there.
But the remaining money had been spent.
Recovering it could require litigation against Teresa.
Melissa asked Clara how far she wanted to go.
“She owns property,” Melissa said. “There are assets.”
Clara thought of Teresa’s Oak Park house.
For months, Clara had cleaned the kitchen while Teresa complained she could barely afford groceries.
She could force a sale someday if she obtained the right judgment.
The idea brought no satisfaction.
Daniel offered to repay the missing amount from his retirement account if Clara agreed not to pursue Teresa personally.
It was the first time he sacrificed something that belonged solely to him.
It was also another attempt to protect his mother from consequences.
Clara did not answer.
