Chapter 9 - VANESSA FOUND OUT WHAT EMILY REALLY SAID

Noah returned home with the full collection two days later.

Twenty-three remaining letters.

The March letter.

The wooden box.

The USB.

Richard placed everything in a fireproof document cabinet inside Noah’s room.

Then he handed Noah the key.

Vanessa saw.

“What is that?”

“My letters.”

“All of them?”

“Yes.”

Her face tightened.

Richard stepped in.

“He decides what happens with them.”

Vanessa laughed.

“Of course he does.”

Noah looked at her.

“What does that mean?”

“Nothing.”

“No. Say it.”

Richard almost intervened.

Stopped.

Vanessa looked at Noah.

“It means this entire house now revolves around your mother again.”

Noah held the cabinet key.

“She was my mom.”

“I know.”

“Then why are you mad?”

Vanessa’s composure cracked.

“Because I’m tired of being punished for being alive.”

The sentence stunned him.

Noah had never thought of her that way.

Richard said:

“That is not Noah’s burden.”

Vanessa turned.

“Of course you’d say that now.”

She looked at Noah.

“Did Emily tell you not to accept me?”

“No.”

Vanessa hesitated.

“What did she say?”

Noah thought.

“That I can stop reading the letters if I want.”

Vanessa stared.

“Really?”

“And she told Aunt Claire not to replace her.”

Vanessa looked toward Richard.

Something complicated moved across her face.

Relief.

Shame.

Anger.

“She didn’t tell you to hate me?”

Noah shook his head.

“No.”

That answer hurt Vanessa more than hatred would have.

For years she had fought against instructions Emily never gave.

The enemy was partly imaginary.

Richard had created that enemy by hiding the truth.

Vanessa walked upstairs.

That evening she returned Emily’s photograph to Noah.

The glass was cracked from the marble table.

“I’m sorry.”

Noah stared at it.

Vanessa added:

“I shouldn’t have touched it.”

He accepted the frame.

He did not forgive her.

She did not ask.

The next morning, however, another consequence arrived.

Claire had told Helen about Vanessa’s treatment of Noah.

Not merely the photograph.

Noah had described repeated comments.

“She’s dead.”

“Your father has a new family.”

“You need to grow up.”

Richard’s failure to intervene had become part of the problem.

A family therapist recommended that Vanessa temporarily move out while the adults assessed whether the home could become emotionally safe.

Vanessa heard the recommendation.

Then looked at Richard.

“You want me gone.”

Richard did not answer immediately.

That delay told her enough.

She packed that night.
