Chapter 13 - THE EVIDENCE THAT MADE EXCUSES USELESS
The formal investigation did not depend on Scout.
It did not depend on Noah’s toddler vocabulary.
It depended on records.
The hospital documentation.
The prescription bottle in Diane’s possession.
Megan’s earlier pediatric report about Noah’s unusual sleepiness.
Ryan and Jessica’s account of the similar incident with Ava.
And, eventually, Diane’s own admissions.
Her attorney advised her not to give detailed statements casually.
But Diane had already acknowledged to Eric, the therapist, and investigators that she had administered a medication she believed would calm Noah.
She insisted she never intended harm.
Nobody accused her of intending harm.
That was not the standard the family needed.
The child-protection case concluded with Noah remaining safely in Megan and Eric’s care and Diane excluded from unsupervised caregiving.
Any further legal consequences would follow ordinary processes rather than a dramatic family showdown.
Megan was relieved.
Then strangely disappointed.
Part of her had imagined some official person declaring:
You were right.
Instead the paperwork was restrained.
Clinical.
Specific.
No moral speech.
Just boundaries and facts.
The deeper exposure happened inside the family.
Eric sent one email to relatives.
He wrote it himself.
Megan did not edit it.
He stated that Diane had given Noah medication without their knowledge or consent.
He stated that Noah’s doctor had not authorized it.
He stated that unsupervised contact was suspended.
And then he wrote:
Please do not contact Megan to argue about this decision. It is mine too.
That final sentence mattered more to Megan than anything else.
For years, Diane had been able to frame boundaries as something Megan imposed on Eric.
Now he placed his name beside one.
Diane called him immediately.
He did not answer.
She called again.
He let it ring.
Then she texted:
So this is what she wanted.
Eric showed Megan.
He did not ask what to say.
He typed:
May you like
No. This is what I decided.
And pressed send.
