Chapter 9 - The Night She Stopped Being Leverage

The Starlight Hotel ballroom had been repaired since the attack.

New chandeliers hung above the dance floor. Fresh gold molding concealed the bullet damage. Guests in tuxedos and evening gowns drank champagne beneath the same ceiling that had once showered glass over Chloe’s head.

She wore a fitted midnight-blue gown.

For the first time, she did not hide her pregnancy.

Conversations stopped when she entered.

Richard met her beside the staircase.

“You came alone?”

“Dominic and I had an argument.”

Relief flashed across his face.

Her father took her arm and guided her toward a private corridor.

“This is for the best. Derek wants to apologize.”

“You still believe him?”

“I believe in solving problems.”

“You mean selling whatever he asks for.”

Richard’s grip tightened.

“Do not make a scene.”

Chloe pulled free.

At the end of the corridor, Derek waited beside an open service elevator.

Two armed men stood behind him.

“There she is,” Derek said. “Chicago’s most valuable mother.”

Richard stopped.

“You said no one would hurt her.”

Derek smiled. “You also believed the hotel plans were for a flooring bid.”

The men moved toward Chloe.

She stepped backward and pressed the emergency button concealed inside her bracelet.

Nothing happened.

Derek lifted a small signal jammer from his pocket.

“Russo’s security tricks are predictable.”

Chloe looked at her father. “Did you know they would take me?”

Richard’s face collapsed.

“I thought they only wanted you to speak to Caruso.”

“You always think the least terrible explanation makes you innocent.”

Derek reached for her.

Chloe threw her weight against the red fire-door release beside the wall.

Heavy steel doors dropped between the corridor sections, separating Derek from his men. The service elevator locked automatically.

Derek spun toward the control panel.

Chloe had designed the hotel’s emergency evacuation plan. She knew every alarm, exit, and security barrier in the building.

“You think I came here unprepared?” she asked.

Richard backed toward the ballroom doors.

Derek grabbed Chloe’s wrist.

Before he could pull her closer, she drove the heel of her shoe down onto his foot and twisted free.

The ballroom doors burst open.

Federal agents entered first.

Luca followed.

Dominic came through last, his face cold with controlled fury.

Derek seized Richard and pressed a small pistol against his side.

“Back up!”

Everyone stopped.

Richard looked at Chloe.

“Help me.”

The request was so familiar that it almost made her laugh.

Even now, her father expected her to save him from the consequences he had invited inside.

Chloe held up her phone.

“The entire conversation was transmitted through the hotel’s hardwired emergency system. Your jammer only blocked wireless signals.”

Derek’s face changed.

From inside the ballroom speakers, his own voice played clearly:

There she is. Chicago’s most valuable mother.

Guests stood frozen beneath the chandeliers.

Reporters raised their phones.

Derek looked toward the exits, but every door was controlled by Chloe’s security sequence.

Dominic’s voice remained level.

“It’s over.”

Derek released Richard and lowered the weapon.

Federal agents took him to the floor and placed him in handcuffs.

Richard stumbled toward Chloe.

“Sweetheart, I never meant—”

She stepped away.

“Do not call me that after delivering me to men with guns.”

Cameras captured the moment her father realized there was no explanation left.

Dominic approached her carefully.

“Are you hurt?”

“No.”

His gaze dropped toward her stomach.

A small movement passed beneath the fabric of her dress.

Chloe placed his hand there.

Their daughter kicked against his palm.

Around them, Derek was arrested, Richard was questioned, and the truth spread through the ballroom.

But Dominic looked only at Chloe.

Not as leverage.

May you like

Not as a weakness.

As the woman who had trapped the men who believed she needed rescuing.
