Chapter 7 - The Video Mom Left Behind

Chloe backed away from Dad, breathing hard.

“You promised,” she whispered. “You promised Mom we’d never talk about it.”

Dad’s face went pale.

“I promised your mother I would keep this family together,” he said. “I never promised to let you destroy your sister.”

Chloe laughed, but it came out broken.

“She would have protected me.”

“No,” Dad said quietly. “At the end, she regretted it.”

The words struck both of us.

I stared at him.

“What?”

Dad looked toward the house, then back at me.

“There’s something your mother left.”

Chloe’s expression changed instantly.

Fear.

Real fear.

“Don’t,” she said.

Dad took his phone from his pocket.

My chest tightened.

“Dad,” I whispered.

He looked at me with unbearable sadness. “You should have seen this years ago.”

He connected his phone to the outdoor speaker system and handed it to one of the event staff near the gazebo. A moment later, the large projection screen Chloe had rented for party photos flickered on.

My mother appeared.

For a second, I forgot how to breathe.

She was sitting in her bedroom, thin from chemo, wearing a soft blue scarf around her head. Her skin was pale. Her eyes were tired.

But her voice was still warm.

“Maya,” she said on the screen.

I covered my mouth.

Around the pool, no one spoke.

“If your father is showing you this, it means I was too much of a coward to say it while I was alive.”

Chloe shook her head, tears spilling now. “No…”

Mom continued.

“The night of the fire, I protected Chloe because I thought I was protecting a frightened child. But I forgot that you were a frightened child too.”

My knees weakened.

Dad reached for my arm, steadying me.

Mom’s recorded voice trembled.

“You never blamed her. Not once. Even when you were screaming through bandage changes. Even when other children stared. Even when your own sister started using your scars to feel prettier.”

Chloe sobbed, “Turn it off.”

No one moved.

Mom looked straight into the camera.

“I am sorry I taught you that love meant silence.”

A tear ran down my face.

“I am sorry I let Chloe become cruel because guilt made us gentle with the wrong daughter.”

Chloe sank onto the edge of a lounge chair.

Mom took a shaky breath.

“Maya, your scars are not the ugliest thing in this family. Our lies were.”

The video ended.

The screen went dark.

And Chloe’s perfect birthday party became a courtroom without a judge.
