Chapter 11 - MARA’S PART IN THE SILENCE
Mara wanted to make Ivan entirely responsible.
For a few days, she did.
Then Rebecca asked to review every voting proxy Mara had signed.
There were seven.
Mara remembered at least four.
She had read almost none carefully.
“You’re not responsible for Ivan misleading you,” Rebecca said.
“I signed them.”
“Yes.”
“I’m an accountant.”
“Yes.”
“I tell clients never to sign financial documents they don’t understand.”
Rebecca waited.
Mara looked away.
“Why didn’t I follow my own rule?”
She knew.
Because asking Ivan for explanations always became an argument.
Because Cynthia mocked her.
Because Hudson Forge success funded the beautiful house and vacations Mara also enjoyed.
Because being told she was uninvolved had, eventually, allowed her to remain uninvolved.
Mara had not caused the deception.
But she had accepted convenience where vigilance would have been uncomfortable.
That realization changed how she approached accountability.
She did not want to storm into Hudson Forge and declare herself CEO.
She did not know enough about daily operations.
Instead she proposed an interim governance plan.
Independent board member.
No unilateral acquisitions.
Related-party transactions reviewed externally.
Mara would exercise her voting rights personally.
Ethan would continue running operations.
Ivan could remain employed temporarily only if the board determined it appropriate and if he stayed away from Mara.
Cynthia called the proposal a coup.
Rachel called it basic governance.
The bank liked it.
That mattered.
The assault case moved separately.
Multiple witnesses confirmed Ivan had forced Mara’s hand toward the grill.
The injury was documented.
Ivan’s attorney initially described the incident as “horseplay that escalated.”
Several guests refused that characterization.
One executive had recorded only the aftermath, not the first contact.
It did not solve the case.
It did corroborate Ivan grabbing Mara again and his panic over her documents.
Mara cooperated with investigators and then stopped trying to control the outcome.
Her marriage attorney filed for separation.
Ivan moved into a corporate apartment.
Cynthia remained in the family home’s guesthouse after Mara changed the main-house access codes through proper legal arrangements.
The family had spent years calling Mara powerless.
