Chapter 4 - THE ESCAPE THEY HAD WRITTEN FOR ME

The forged letter changed the investigation.

Until then, Ethan’s attorney argued that the garage incident had been an isolated marital fight worsened by financial stress. The letter suggested preparation.

So did the suitcase police found in the trunk of Carol’s car.

It contained maternity clothes, toiletries, and an old prepaid phone registered under a false name. Ethan planned to create the appearance that I had left after signing over the house.

Whether he intended to kill me remained a question prosecutors would have to prove through evidence, not suspicion.

The medical records provided part of the answer.

My blood tests showed repeated low doses of sedative rather than one accidental exposure. The burns were in different stages of healing. Nurses photographed them while preserving my privacy.

One injury matched a night I had called Rachel and said I could not attend her birthday dinner because of a migraine.

I had not remembered the garage afterward.

Rachel began crying when she realized how many explanations she had accepted.

“I thought you were pulling away because you were ashamed I didn’t like Ethan.”

“I was ashamed you were right.”

She took my hand.

“You didn’t deserve this because you stayed.”

I needed to hear that, but I also needed to face my own mistake.

I had ignored early warning signs because I wanted the baby born into a complete family. When Ethan shoved a chair during an argument, I called it stress. When he took my debit card, I called it budgeting. When Carol moved into our home and began checking my phone, I told myself I was being ungrateful.

Avoiding one painful decision had allowed hundreds of smaller decisions to be made for me.

Detective Chen later brought Nicole to the hospital with her attorney.

Nicole looked exhausted and frightened.

“I didn’t know about the garage,” she said.

“You knew he was married.”

“Yes.”

“You knew I was pregnant.”

“Yes.”

She did not ask me to excuse her.

Instead, she handed the detective an encrypted drive Ethan had given her. He told her it contained company records she would need after taking ownership.

The drive held spreadsheets, insurance documents, property drafts, and a list of payments to Carol.

One folder was labeled Megan Medical.

Inside were scanned pages from my prenatal chart and notes Ethan had written after appointments.

The final note read:

If emergency delivery happens first, Carol uses hospital form.

There was no hospital form in the folder.

Then Nicole remembered that Carol had visited a lawyer two weeks earlier.
