Every morning in our rundown Texas rental, my husband dragged me to the backyard, tied my hands to the porch pillar, and lashed my pregnant belly while yelling, “All you make is worthless daughters—you’re a broken wife!”

Dr. Pierce delivered Elena’s baby by emergency cesarean section after her blood pressure rose dangerously.

The child was a girl.

Elena held her against her chest beneath the hospital’s warm lights and cried into a cap of dark hair.

She named her Grace.

Callie smiled when she heard the name.

June touched one tiny foot and said, “She looks strong.”

Derek’s attorney requested immediate confirmation of the birth and the child’s sex, arguing that Derek had parental rights.

The protective order allowed no direct contact. Family court postponed any decision until paternity, safety, and criminal proceedings were addressed.

Derek did not send a message asking whether Grace was healthy.

He filed a motion seeking to add her to the custody case.

The prosecutor visited Elena’s hospital room after she had rested.

The grand jury would hear evidence the following week. Elena could testify later, but Derek’s defense had offered a new deal.

He would admit the financial fraud and surrender his rights to M&M’s assets if Elena described the porch violence as noncriminal marital conduct. He would still seek supervised contact with the children.

“He wants to be remembered as a bad businessman, not a violent father,” the prosecutor said.

Elena looked at Grace sleeping beside her.

Accepting might increase restitution for Travis’s family and former workers. It might shorten the case. It might also erase the specific harm Derek had inflicted on Elena and taught the girls to accept.

Kay visited that afternoon.

Elena told her about the offer.

“I need the money recovered,” Kay said. “But I don’t need you to lie about why it disappeared.”

The answer settled something in Elena.

Accountability could not be built by asking one harmed woman to erase another.

At the final pre-indictment conference, Elena attended by video from the hospital.

Derek appeared from his attorney’s office. Martha sat beside separate counsel.

The prosecutor gave them one last opportunity to accept responsibility.

Martha blamed the economy.

Derek blamed Elena’s fear, the failed company, and the pressure of raising daughters.

Then he looked directly into the camera.
