Chapter 6 - WHAT EACH OF THEM WANTED TO SAVE

The special board meeting took place six weeks after the raid.

Julian and Arthur had both been released under strict bond conditions. A temporary no-contact order prevented Julian from approaching me outside legal proceedings, so we sat at opposite ends of the Vance Medical boardroom with attorneys between us.

Beatrice occupied the chair beside Arthur as if seating arrangement alone could restore the family hierarchy.

Chloe attended remotely with her lawyer.

An independent forensic accountant presented the access logs, vendor payments, rejected IT requests, and prewritten incident report.

Julian stared at the table.

Arthur stared at his son.

When the presentation ended, Arthur spoke first.

“You used my authorization.”

Julian gave a tired laugh. “You taught me how this company survives.”

“I taught you to protect it.”

“You taught me that the name mattered more than the method.”

Arthur’s face tightened because the accusation contained enough truth to hurt.

Beatrice turned toward me. “You could have handled this privately.”

“You watched your son hit me.”

“You came into our family looking for a place to belong,” she said. “Don’t pretend you didn’t benefit.”

I had.

That was the part I had spent years refusing to name.

“I liked being a Vance,” I said. “I liked the house, the title, and knowing nobody could dismiss me as the girl whose father left unpaid bills behind. I saw things I should’ve reported sooner because I didn’t want to lose any of it.”

Julian finally looked at me.

“You’re admitting you built the system.”

“I’m admitting what I did. You should try it.”

His attorney touched his sleeve, warning him to stop.

Julian pulled away.

“All you had to do was stand beside me,” he said. “We could’ve fixed the books, let my father retire, and raised our daughter without any of this.”

There it was.

Not regret for the affair.

Not regret for the punch.

Regret that I had refused to remain useful.

Arthur asked Chloe whether the staged pregnancy had been Julian’s idea.

She hesitated before answering.

“Mrs. Vance suggested the word heir.”

Beatrice’s expression barely moved.

The board voted to suspend Arthur, Julian, and Beatrice from every management and trust position pending the federal case. An outside restructuring officer would control company operations.

As the meeting ended, Julian signed a statement denying all knowledge of the false approvals.

The forensic accountant then produced the final item recovered from his office: handwritten transfer instructions matching the shell-company payments.

Julian had chosen deception again.

The evidence would be filed with the court the following morning.
