Chapter 1 - THE LIFE HE CARRIED AWAY

The concrete slab dropped before I could pull Mason clear.

It struck the edge of a steel desk, split the desk in half, and pinned my left leg beneath a jagged beam. Dust filled the crushed hallway of the Halcyon Hotel annex in downtown Los Angeles.

My seven-year-old son collapsed against me.

“Mom, I’m cold.”

His face was flushed, but his body shook. He had awakened with a fever that morning. Daniel had insisted we attend the annex’s opening reception anyway because investors wanted to see “the family behind the project.”

Through a break in the wall, I saw my husband carrying Vanessa Price toward an ambulance.

Vanessa’s ankle was wrapped in a paramedic’s temporary splint. Her white blouse was dusty, and one arm circled Daniel’s neck. A thick red project folder remained pressed against her chest.

“Daniel!” I shouted. “Mason’s burning up! Help us!”

He turned.

For one second, I believed instinct would bring him back.

Then Vanessa tightened her arm around him.

“Danny, please. I can’t feel my foot.”

A paramedic pointed toward Mason. “Sir, we can take the child. The woman’s injury appears stable.”

Daniel’s expression hardened.

“There’s no room. Rescue will return.”

“There is room,” the paramedic said.

“My wife panics. Get Vanessa out.”

Mason lifted his head from my shoulder.

“Did Dad choose her over me?”

I pulled him closer. “Your dad made a choice. That isn’t the same as you not being worth choosing.”

Daniel climbed into the ambulance with Vanessa still in his arms. The doors closed.

Near my hand, a fractured marble panel had fallen away from the wall. Behind it, a concrete support column showed a crack filled with pale gray sealant.

I had seen photographs of that exact repair three weeks earlier.

Daniel had told me the crack was cosmetic.

The air above the courtyard began to roar. Rotor wash drove dust through the ruined hallway as a black helicopter descended beyond the shattered windows. Rescue technicians in orange helmets moved toward us.

Behind them came a tall man with silver hair and a navy coat.

My father knelt beside Mason and touched his forehead.

“Claire, how long has he been like this?”

“Since this morning.”

His gaze moved to my trapped leg, then toward the road where the ambulance had disappeared.

“Where’s Daniel?”

“He left with Vanessa.”

Dad’s jaw tightened. He opened the document case he had carried from the helicopter.

Inside was a copy of the annex’s structural review.

Across the first page, in red capital letters, were the words:

OCCUPANCY NOT RECOMMENDED.

Dad looked at the cracked column behind me.

“Why were you and Mason inside a building that was supposed to remain closed?”
