Chapter 1 - THE PHONES RANG

Daniel slapped Rachel Bennett across the face in front of his entire family.

The sound cracked through the marble foyer.

“GET OUT OF MY HOUSE!”

Rachel’s cheek burned.

Nobody moved.

Evelyn Mercer stood beside the sweeping staircase in a yellow satin dress, one hand resting against the banister as though she were posing for a family portrait instead of watching her son strike his wife.

She smiled.

“Leave the jewelry,” Evelyn said. “Leave the car. Everything here belongs to my son.”

Behind her stood Daniel’s younger brother, Michael, his wife, Lauren, and Daniel’s sister Paige.

All three had been invited to what Rachel thought was a private anniversary dinner.

Apparently it had become her eviction.

Rachel looked around the Greenwich mansion.

Eight bedrooms.

Limestone fireplaces.

The hand-cut marble floor Daniel bragged about at every dinner party.

The staircase he called his staircase when contractors photographed the renovation.

The chandelier he once told a magazine interviewer he had “brought back from Milan.”

Rachel had chosen it.

Rachel had paid the invoice.

Rachel had purchased the house eighteen months before she ever met Daniel.

Yet somewhere along the way, everyone had started calling it Daniel’s estate.

Rachel touched her cheek.

Daniel stepped closer.

“Why are you still standing here?”

She started laughing.

It surprised everyone.

Daniel’s face hardened.

“You think this is funny?”

Rachel took out her phone.

“A little.”

Evelyn’s smile faded.

Rachel opened the Hawthorne Estate security application.

Six years earlier, when she renovated the property, she had created individual digital profiles for everyone who regularly stayed there.

Daniel had administrator privileges because he was her husband.

Evelyn had permanent guest access because after Daniel’s father died, Rachel had told her she should never have to ask before visiting.

Paige and Michael had family codes.

Lauren had one too.

Rachel had spent years treating access like affection.

Tonight she learned those were not the same thing.

She tapped:

Revoke delegated access.

Daniel’s phone rang first.

Then Evelyn’s.

Michael’s.

Paige’s.

Lauren’s.

Five screens lit around the foyer.

Daniel looked at his.

His expression changed.

“What did you do?”

Rachel slipped her phone back into her clutch.

“I removed every household permission I personally granted.”

Evelyn stared at her.

“You can’t lock Daniel out of his own home.”

Rachel smiled faintly.

“I didn’t.”

She looked at Daniel.

“His spouse access stays active until my attorney tells me otherwise.”

Then she looked back at Evelyn.

“Yours doesn’t.”

Michael frowned at his phone.

“Rachel, what is this?”

“Your permanent guest code is canceled.”

Paige looked stunned.

“You’re throwing all of us out?”

“No.”

Rachel’s voice remained calm.

“You’re guests until midnight. Nora from property management will coordinate anything left here after that.”

Daniel’s face turned red.

“You don’t get to do this.”

Rachel finally looked directly at him.

“I just did.”

Evelyn laughed.

“This is childish.”

“No.”

Rachel touched the cheek Daniel had struck.

“Childish was letting all of you pretend this house belonged to Daniel because correcting you felt rude.”

Daniel stepped toward her.

“I said leave.”

“You can say it again.”

“Rachel.”

“It still won’t change the deed.”

Silence.

Paige looked at Daniel.

Michael looked at Evelyn.

Evelyn’s smile disappeared completely.

Daniel lowered his voice.

“Don’t do this in front of them.”

That interested Rachel.

“Why?”

“Because this is between us.”

“You slapped me in front of them.”

He looked toward his family.

“Everyone go into the library.”

Nobody moved.

Rachel laughed again.

Daniel hated losing control of a room.

She knew that now.

Her phone vibrated.

Not the security app.

An email.

From Hartford Dominion Bank.

Subject:

URGENT — BENEFICIAL OWNERSHIP VERIFICATION

Rachel opened it.

Daniel saw the sender.

His face went white.

That frightened her more than the slap.

“What is Hartford Dominion verifying?”

Daniel did not answer.

Evelyn spoke instead.

“Rachel, give him the phone.”

Rachel turned toward her.

“Why?”

Evelyn’s expression had changed too.

The five ringing phones had not frightened her.

The bank had.

Rachel opened the email.

One sentence stood out:

Following notice that delegated property authority has been withdrawn, we require immediate clarification regarding Mr. Daniel Mercer’s represented beneficial interest in 14 Hawthorne Ridge Road.

Rachel read the address twice.

Her address.

Her house.

She slowly looked at Daniel.

“Why is your bank asking about your beneficial interest in my property?”

Nobody in the foyer breathed.

Daniel’s voice dropped.

“Rachel, not tonight.”

May you like

That was the moment she understood he had not slapped her because he wanted her out.

He needed her gone before she asked the question.
