Chapter 12 - The Sister Who Expected a Soft Landing

The interview took place in a conference room at the police department.

Sarah attended with her attorney. Mike remained outside with Tasha. Diane sat beside Lily because Lily had asked for their mother.

For the first time since the doorstep, the sisters were in the same room.

Lily looked thinner. Her hair had been cut to her shoulders, and the sweater from the remote hearing hung loosely around her frame.

She began by asking about the children.

“Emily lost another tooth,” Sarah said. “Jack’s weight is improving.”

Lily pressed her lips together. “Do they ask for me?”

Sarah did not answer quickly enough.

The pain on Lily’s face was real.

So was the anger that followed.

“You always wanted this.”

“What?”

“To be the person everybody depends on.”

Sarah looked at the one-way glass along the wall.

“I did like being needed.”

Lily seemed surprised by the admission.

Sarah continued. “That doesn’t mean I wanted your children abandoned outside my house.”

“I knew you’d take care of them.”

“You knew I wouldn’t say no.”

“There’s a difference?”

“Yes.”

The investigator asked Lily why she signed the Wilmington lease before leaving.

Lily stared down at her hands.

She talked about losing her job, falling behind on rent, and waking each morning already angry at the children for needing breakfast. She described standing outside Jack’s room one night and realizing she wanted to walk away more than she wanted to comfort him.

“I thought that meant they were in danger with me,” she said.

“Why not call Mike?” Sarah asked.

“Because then he wins.”

The words came out before Lily could soften them.

Mike, outside the room, heard through the monitoring system.

The investigator asked about the forged caregiving agreement.

Lily said she copied Sarah’s signature because every official form required an answer and Sarah was the only answer that felt safe.

Diane reached for her hand.

Lily pulled away.

“What were you trying to protect?” Sarah asked.

“Myself.”

It was the first fully honest word Lily had offered.

She continued before anyone interrupted.

“If CPS found the apartment like that, I’d be the mother who neglected her kids. If Mike got custody, I’d be the liar who spent his money. If I left them with you, I could tell myself I chose someone better.”

Sarah felt the confession settle without becoming an excuse.

“And the benefits?”

“I needed the first month in Wilmington.”

“And the note?”

Lily looked toward the glass.

“I wanted you angry enough to take over. If I sounded scared, you would’ve tried to find me and bring me home.”

Diane began crying.

Lily’s expression hardened again.

“You always brought me home.”

Sarah leaned forward.

“That was my mistake. I kept protecting you from the moment when you had to decide who you were.”

Lily’s eyes filled.

“Are you going to help them charge me?”

“I’m going to tell the truth.”

“You’re my sister.”

“And they are children.”

The meeting ended without reconciliation.

As Lily stood, she looked through the glass toward the hallway where Mike waited.

“Does he hate me?”

Sarah answered, “He doesn’t get to be the most important person in this anymore.”
