The crisis-management contract contained a proposed communications plan.
Priya obtained it through Dalton’s records after Jenna discovered the invoice.
The document never named Sophie directly. It referred to her as “the principal’s fiancée.”

The videographer had not known that Evelyn planned to restrain her.
His raw footage showed Mark moving his chair backward ten seconds before the assault. It showed him smiling before Evelyn touched the cake. It showed Evelyn glancing at him for confirmation.
Most importantly, it showed Mark looking toward the camera immediately after Sophie spat out the frosting.
He had not been watching his wife.
He had been checking whether her reaction had been captured.
The crisis firm’s plan reinterpreted every earlier clue.
Mark’s concern about keeping his suit clean had not been casual cowardice. He wanted to remain composed on video.
The private signing room had been scheduled when Sophie would be embarrassed, isolated, and desperate to restore the reception.
The edited story about Sophie’s instability had been prepared before she reacted.
The loan, the cake, the recording, and the guests were parts of the same strategy.
If Sophie signed, Mark obtained her financial backing.
If she refused calmly, he could continue pressuring her privately.
If she became angry, he had footage and a public explanation ready.
“He created a situation where every reaction benefited him,” Rachel said.
Sophie looked through the conference-room window at downtown Richmond.
For weeks, she had tried to decide whether Mark loved her but lacked courage, or whether fear of disappointing Evelyn had made him cruel.
The question was no longer useful.
Mark had treated both women’s weaknesses as tools.
He used Evelyn’s fear of losing her son.
He used Sophie’s instinct to repair public damage.
He used Jenna’s loyalty to employees.
He even used his father’s company as a shield for a private investment he could not afford to lose.
The discovery created immediate damage.
Jenna confronted Mark and placed him on administrative leave with Evelyn’s support. Mark responded by claiming Jenna lacked authority and locking her out of the company’s banking portal.
Two project managers resigned.
A lender suspended two construction draws.
Employees received only seventy percent of their expected paychecks.
That afternoon, Mark’s attorney delivered a proposal.
Mark would return Sophie’s transferred funds over eighteen months, abandon any claim to her condo, and accept a quick divorce.
In exchange, Sophie had to withdraw the identity-theft allegation, state that the electronic signature had been inserted during “preliminary negotiations,” and agree that the wedding assault resulted from a mutual family dispute.
Rachel pushed the proposal away.
“He wants you to help complete the story he prepared before the wedding.”
Sophie looked at the raw video paused on Mark’s satisfied face.
“Tell him no.”
Rachel studied her. “The alternative may involve civil litigation, a bank investigation, and testimony about your private relationship.”
“I know.”
“It may also finish Dalton Custom Homes.”
Sophie thought of the employees, Jenna, and the company Mark’s father had built.
