Chapter 10 - SHE WASN’T TRYING TO POISON LILY—SHE WAS TRYING TO FRAME ME
Patricia finally gave a full statement after prosecutors and investigators confronted her with the photographs.
She did not confess to intending Lily to swallow thirty-six magnets.
The truth was somehow both less monstrous and still unforgivable.
She had staged the magnets.
Not an ingestion.
A household hazard.
The plan was simple in Patricia’s mind.
Place the magnetic set on the dining table while she was supervising Lily.
Take photographs.
Later tell Daniel she “found” the dangerous objects left within Lily’s reach after arriving at our house.
Another entry for the custody file.
Another example of Rachel being careless.
Another reason Daniel should fight any future relocation.
Patricia believed the dining-room camera was broken.
She ordered the package in my name so the object would appear to be mine.
She photographed the open container.
Then stepped away to take a phone call in the kitchen.
When she returned, some magnets were missing.
She photographed that too.
And did nothing.
That was the part that changed everything.
“Why didn’t you ask Lily?” Officer Carter asked.
Patricia began crying.
“I did.”
“What did she say?”
“That she didn’t know.”
“Did you count them?”
“Yes.”
“How many were missing?”
Patricia looked down.
“Most of them.”
Daniel went white.
“What did you do?”
“I panicked.”
I stared at her.
“You left.”
She covered her face.
Patricia admitted she gathered the remaining pieces, took the container home and told herself Lily probably dropped the missing magnets somewhere.
She did not call me.
Did not call Daniel.
Did not call a doctor.
Why?
Because calling would expose the setup.
She would have to explain why she bought the magnets, shipped them under my name and placed them in my house.
She chose protecting the custody narrative over warning us.
Three earlier clues changed meaning.
Her knowledge that the camera was “broken.”
The package under my name.
The custody file full of hazards that always seemed to implicate me.
Patricia had been manufacturing negligence.
The magnets were supposed to become the strongest example yet.
Instead, Lily swallowed them.
Not because Patricia physically fed them to her.
Because Patricia deliberately created a dangerous situation and then concealed what happened when the plan went wrong.
That was the major twist.
And Daniel had his own part in it.
Patricia could not have built a fake negligence case if Daniel had not asked her to collect evidence in the first place.
He had not asked her to stage anything.
He did, however, create the audience she was performing for.
Daniel sat across from his mother.
“I told you to write down things that actually happened.”
Patricia looked at him.
“You wanted proof Rachel was unsafe.”
“I wanted the truth.”
“No.”
Patricia wiped her face.
“You wanted something that would make sure she couldn’t take Lily.”
Daniel stopped.
Because that was also true.
His fear had created the demand.
