Chapter 4 - WHAT HER FATHER COULD NOT REPAIR

Javier and Carmen were questioned that afternoon.

Neither was released before midnight.

The mobile notary who had prepared the transfer documents surrendered to investigators two days later. She admitted she had been paid to certify Sofia’s signature without seeing her sign.

The private lender froze the loan and cooperated with the fraud investigation.

Robles Luxury Development collapsed within a month.

Javier blamed Sofia publicly.

He told friends that she had destroyed a family business because of a private disagreement. Carmen’s sister claimed Sofia had exaggerated her injuries. Several wedding guests repeated the story until hotel security released the hallway footage under subpoena.

The video showed Javier outside the honeymoon suite while Sofia screamed his name.

He did not knock.

He did not call security.

At one point, he checked his watch.

After the footage became evidence, most of his defenders disappeared.

Sofia filed for an annulment based on fraud and coercion. Javier contested it at first, demanding part of the condo as a marital asset.

The court denied his claim.

The property had remained solely in Sofia’s name, and the forged transfer had no legal effect.

Alexander stayed in Dallas during the investigation.

He rented a small apartment rather than move into mine. Every morning, he texted Sofia one sentence.

I’m nearby if you need me.

He did not demand a response.

Some days, she answered.

Some days, she did not.

One evening, Sofia asked him to come over.

She sat by the window with the city lights behind her. The torn wedding dress had been released from evidence and hung inside a garment bag near the piano.

“Why did you stay away so long?” she asked.

Alexander sat across from her.

“Because I was proud, ashamed and afraid you would reject me again.”

“I was twenty-one.”

“I was fifty.”

He did not soften it.

“I should have been the adult.”

“You sent money.”

“Money was easier than apologizing.”

“You gave me the condo.”

“A deed is not a father.”

Sofia looked down at her hands.

“I told Mom I never wanted to see you again.”

“I know.”

“I didn’t mean forever.”

“I should have known that too.”

Her voice tightened.

“Part of me called you tonight because I thought you would destroy Javier. I wanted someone stronger than me to make him afraid.”

Alexander leaned forward.

“You were strong before I arrived.”

“I was crawling through a hotel service door in a torn wedding dress.”

“And you still got out.”

Tears rose in Sofia’s eyes.

“I married someone who planned to rob me.”

“You trusted a man who worked very hard to appear trustworthy. His deception belongs to him.”

“What belongs to me?”

“What you choose next.”

Sofia looked toward the garment bag.

“I don’t know what to do with that dress.”

Alexander followed her gaze.

“Throw it away.”

“I thought about it.”

“Burn it.”

“No more fires.”

He almost smiled.

Then Sofia said, “I want to cut one piece from the sleeve.”

“Why?”

“So when I start blaming myself, I can remember that the dress tore because I was fighting to get free.”

Alexander lowered his head.

That was the moment I understood that justice would not restore the woman Sofia had been before the wedding.

It had to protect the woman who survived it.

The criminal case ended eight months later.

Javier pleaded guilty to conspiracy, fraud, unlawful restraint and assault. His agreement required prison time and full cooperation against the notary and his mother.

Carmen refused a deal until Sofia agreed to give a victim-impact statement in open court.

Carmen entered the courtroom still convinced she had been protecting her family.

Sofia stood twelve feet away.

“You called me selfish because I would not surrender my home,” she said. “You called violence a lesson. You called silence respect.”

Carmen stared at the table.

Sofia continued.

“You did not teach me how to be a wife. You taught me what kind of family I must never build.”

Carmen finally looked up.

“We were desperate.”

“So was I, behind that locked door.”

Her voice did not rise.

“You heard me crying, and you kept asking for my signature.”

Carmen received a longer sentence than Javier because she had organized the assault and continued threatening Sofia afterward.

Outside the courthouse, reporters called Sofia’s name.

She walked past them without speaking.

Alexander waited beside the car.

“Are you all right?” he asked.

“No.”

It was the first honest answer.

He nodded.

“Do you want me to drive?”

“Yes.”

That was how their relationship began again.

May you like

Not with forgiveness.

With a ride home.
