Chapter 5 - THE BROTHER WHO NEEDED A SON
Mason’s motive was not difficult to understand.
That made it more painful.
Diane had suffered three miscarriages. Her last pregnancy ended with surgery that left her unable to carry a child. Mason watched his wife retreat from friends, church gatherings and every room where babies appeared.
Then Claire became pregnant.
Their father offered a solution.
He would tell Claire the baby died. Mason and Diane would raise the child. André would be removed through returned letters and false claims that Claire had married.
Diane was told Claire had agreed.
Mason knew she had not.
“Dad said she’d ruin the placement if she saw him,” Mason told Monica during a recorded settlement conference. “Claire wasn’t well.”
“You mean she was grieving the child you had taken,” André said.
Mason rubbed both hands across his face. “You were nineteen. You had no money.”
“I had work.”
“In Baltimore. Living over a garage.”
“It was still my decision.”
Mason’s attorney interrupted before the argument could become unusable.
Claire studied her brother.
He looked smaller than the man who had shoved her onto the path.
“Why did you attack me?” she asked.
“I thought the envelope would destroy Caleb.”
“It protected you.”
Mason looked away.
After Diane’s death, Caleb began questioning inconsistencies in his birth records. Mason responded by drinking more and cutting off conversations.
When Paul’s payments ended, Mason attempted to pressure Claire’s estate planning adviser into arranging a “family loan.” The adviser refused.
Mason had spent years claiming money kept the secret contained.
In reality, the money had allowed him to avoid accountability.
The major twist came from Diane’s final journal, which Caleb found inside a cedar chest.
Diane had discovered the truth in 2004.
She confronted Mason and wanted to tell Claire. Mason persuaded her that disclosure would cause Claire to claim Caleb and break apart both families.
Diane began writing letters to Claire but never mailed them.
In her final entry, she admitted something else.
Paul was not paying Mason to protect Caleb.
Mason had blackmailed him.
He threatened to tell Claire that Paul had known since 1997 unless Paul continued sending money.
Paul, terrified of losing his marriage and ashamed of his first silence, kept paying.
Claire’s father had created the original lie.
Mason had turned it into an income.
Paul had financed it because every year of silence made the next confession more costly.
When Caleb read the journal, he ended the video call and did not respond for three days.

I’ll do the kinship test. But if it confirms this, I need everyone in the same room. No more separate stories.
