Chapter 8 - THE DECISION THAT COULD COST THEM THE COMPANY

Claire met North Vale’s outside counsel Friday morning.
Peter came.
Evan did not.
His attorney sent a short letter stating that Evan denied wrongdoing and would respond through appropriate channels.
Claire placed the two burgundy pouches on the table.
She explained exactly how Lily found them.
No embellishment.
No speculation.
Then Peter spoke.
His voice shook once.
He admitted Richard had refused to approve the collateral.
He admitted giving Evan signature samples.
He admitted giving Evan the signet ring.
He admitted knowing a document would be created reflecting approval Richard had not given.
The lawyer stopped taking notes.
“You understood at the time that Richard Bennett had not signed the consent?”
Peter looked down.
“Yes.”
Claire watched thirty-six years of sibling history collapse into one syllable.
The lawyer asked, “Did you personally sign Richard Bennett’s name?”
“No.”
“Did you see Mr. Hale do so?”
“No.”
“Who provided the two witness signatures?”
“I don’t know.”
The lawyer looked at Claire.
“And you had no knowledge of this?”
“None.”
“Did you authorize Mr. Hale to negotiate on your behalf?”
“No.”
“Did you know he received an advisory fee?”
“No.”
North Vale did not threaten immediate foreclosure.
Instead, it suspended enforcement discussions temporarily while reviewing the file.
That was not relief.
It was a clock.
The lender’s counsel made something clear.
If the original collateral consent could not be relied upon, the loan would still exist.
The company had received and spent $2.4 million.
Fraud did not make the money disappear.
Some restructuring would have to occur.
Afterward, Peter followed Claire into the parking garage.
“You did the right thing.”
She turned.
“Don’t make me feel better.”
“I’m not.”
“You lied to me for eighteen months.”
“I know.”
“You let me marry him.”
Peter’s eyes filled.
That was the one accusation he could not absorb cleanly.
“I thought he loved you.”
Claire stepped closer.
“You also needed him.”
Peter looked away.
There it was.
Evan had not simply become Claire’s fiancé.
He had become Peter’s solution.
And Peter had protected the solution.
“Did you ever wonder why he started dating me three months after the loan closed?”
Peter flinched.
“Claire.”
“Did you?”
“I didn’t want to.”
That answer hurt more than no.
Claire got into her car.
“Step down from company management while this is reviewed.”
Peter stared.
“You’re serious.”
“Yes.”
“I’m the reason it survived.”
“You’re also the reason we’re here.”
“You can’t run Bennett.”
“I’m not planning to.”
“Then who?”
“Dana can manage operations with outside oversight temporarily.”
Peter laughed bitterly.
“You’ve been back in the company for four days.”
“And you’ve been hiding fraud for eighteen months.”
His face hardened.
For a moment they were children again, competing for their father’s approval.
Then Peter’s shoulders dropped.
“If I step down, everybody will know.”
Claire opened the car door.
“That’s the first consequence you’ve mentioned that belongs only to you.”
She drove away.

By afternoon, Peter submitted a temporary leave of absence.
For the first time, he had given up something he could not immediately take back.
