Chapter 4 - THE ENGAGEMENT ENDED ON CAMERA

The chandeliers were glowing again when I returned to the Belle Meade estate.

This time, I wore a navy suit and carried no shopping bag.

Ethan walked beside me.

Inside the garden, George stood before the investors with Vanessa and Patricia near the stage. Vanessa still wore her engagement ring.

She smiled when she saw Ethan.

Then she noticed me.

George lowered the microphone.

“This is a private meeting.”

“The property is mine,” I said. “You are the guest.”

The investors turned toward us.

Patricia stepped forward.

“Margaret, yesterday was unfortunate, but there is no reason to make a spectacle.”

“I was already the spectacle. Today is the explanation.”

Vanessa reached for Ethan.

He moved past her.

“We’re done.”

Her face went blank.

“Ethan, don’t do this in front of everyone.”

“You had no problem doing things in front of everyone yesterday.”

“I panicked.”

“You recognized my mother before she entered the garden.”

Vanessa looked at Patricia.

That glance told the room more than any denial could have.

I connected my phone to the outdoor screen.

The video began with the blast of water knocking me to my knees. Guests watched themselves laughing, filming, and turning away.

One man lowered his head.

A woman near the roses began to cry.

Then Noah’s recording played.

Patricia’s voice filled the garden.

“Make her lose her temper. Ethan already thinks she wants to control him.”

Patricia gripped the back of a chair.

“That recording is illegal.”

Ruth stepped forward.

“Not under the circumstances in which it was made. We can discuss that with your attorney.”

George pointed at Ethan.

“You’re throwing away a major expansion because your mother’s feelings were hurt.”

“My mother was assaulted.”

“She was sprayed with water.”

Ethan crossed the space between them.

“You hid forty million dollars in debt and tried to make me guarantee it.”

The investors began murmuring.

George’s face changed.

“That information is confidential.”

“It was fraudulent,” Ruth said.

Two accountants distributed copies of the real financial statements and the concealed guarantee pages.

Vanessa turned to her father.

“You said those accounts were protected.”

George stared at her.

“Stop talking.”

“You told me Ethan would sign before anyone found them.”

The words escaped too quickly.

Every phone in the garden rose.

Vanessa realized what she had admitted.

Patricia grabbed her arm.

“Be quiet.”

Ethan removed the engagement ring from Vanessa’s finger. He did it gently, which somehow made the moment colder.

“You knew what they were doing.”

Tears filled her eyes.

“I did it for us.”

“There was never an us.”

“Yes, there was.”

“You threatened a waiter because he tried to help an old woman.”

“I knew she wasn’t an old woman. I knew she was your mother.”

The garden became completely silent.

Vanessa heard her own words and closed her eyes.

Ethan stepped back as if she had struck him.

I had expected anger from him.

What I saw was grief.

He had loved her.

That did not disappear merely because she had proved unworthy of it.

George lunged toward the table holding the documents, but two security officers blocked him.

Ruth had notified the state financial-crimes unit that morning. Investigators were waiting at the front of the estate with warrants for George’s office and company records.

Patricia looked at me.

“You planned to destroy us.”

“No. I planned to learn who my son was marrying.”

I glanced toward the muddy patch where I had knelt.

“You handled the rest yourselves.”

As the investigators entered the garden, George shouted that Ethan had participated in the merger fraud.

Ethan did not react.

He handed Ruth his phone.

“Give them everything.”

May you like

That choice could have cost him his company.

It was the first one he made that day without calculating the price.
