Chapter 6 - Gabriel Had His Own Silence to Explain

Valeria met Gabriel at a diner near Lincoln Park.

Not because she trusted him again.

Because she finally had questions only he could answer.

“You knew Teresa took money.”

“I suspected.”

“You knew Mauricio had debt.”

“Yes.”

“You knew my name was being used.”

“Eventually.”

“And you let me believe you disappeared because you hated my husband.”

Gabriel looked down at his coffee.

“You told me never to contact you again.”

“After Mauricio said you tried to blackmail him.”

“I know.”

“Did you?”

Gabriel’s mouth tightened.

“I threatened him.”

“With what?”

“Reporting what I found.”

“That’s not what he told me.”

“No.”

Valeria waited.

Gabriel rubbed his thumb along the edge of the mug.

“Before any of this, Mauricio came to me for money.”

“How much?”

“Seventy-five thousand.”

Valeria blinked.

“You gave it to him?”

“Forty.”

“From where?”

“My savings.”

“Why didn’t you tell me?”

“He said you were already stressed about work and he’d pay me back in ninety days.”

“He didn’t.”

“No.”

Gabriel continued.

“When I started looking at the books, I found payments I couldn’t explain. Then Teresa got involved.”

“In what way?”

“She told me family should help family.”

Valeria almost laughed.

“That sounds like her.”

“I told Mauricio I wouldn’t lend him another dollar.”

“And?”

“Two months later he suddenly had enough cash to make payroll.”

“That was the first forged loan.”

“I didn’t know it then.”

Valeria watched her brother.

“What did you do?”

“I accused him of hiding investors.”

“He told me you were jealous.”

“I was angry. I handled it badly.”

That surprised her.

Gabriel had always been difficult to argue with because he rarely admitted fault.

“I showed up at your house,” he said. “I told you Mauricio was lying to you.”

“You also called him a parasite.”

“He was standing behind you smiling at me.”

“So you made it easy for me to choose him.”

Gabriel nodded.

“Yes.”

Valeria looked away.

She remembered that night.

Gabriel angry.

Mauricio calm.

Teresa comforting.

Valeria had interpreted calmness as innocence.

She knew better now.

“Why did you keep investigating?”

Gabriel stared through the diner window.

“Because you’re my sister.”

“You could’ve sent the documents.”

“I didn’t have enough.”

“You had something.”

“I also had pride.”

That answer hurt because it sounded true.

He had waited for certainty.

She had waited for an apology.

Mauricio benefited from both.

“Why show up at the promotion dinner?”

Gabriel reached inside his coat and pulled out a folded email.

A copy of Archer Bennett’s compensation announcement.

Her promotion included a $90,000 retention bonus payable within thirty days.

“I learned last week that Mauricio had asked his accountant about expected cash coming into your household.”

Valeria’s stomach tightened.

“How?”

“The accountant contacted me because he’d finally started asking questions about Vega Family Services.”

Gabriel tapped the email.

“I thought they were preparing to take your bonus too.”

Valeria looked at him.

“So you came to stop it.”

“I came to make sure you saw the documents before another dollar moved.”

May you like

The folder had not been revenge.

It had been a deadline.
