"At my funeral, my husband smiled beside his mistress and said I deserved to freeze. He didn’t know I was listening from a hospital bed."

CHAPTER 1

At my funeral, my husband smiled beside his mistress and said I deserved to freeze.

He did not know I was listening from a hospital bed.

The phone in Adrian Cross’s hand showed Victor standing in the lobby of a private funeral home in Aspen, wearing a black suit, his hair perfectly combed, his face arranged into something that almost looked like grief.

Almost.

Beside him stood Serena in a black dress, one hand resting lightly on his arm like she already belonged there.

Funeral flowers blurred behind them.

My funeral flowers.

I lay in a private hospital room with monitors beeping around me, one hand wrapped around my stomach, barely strong enough to breathe.

Nurse Rachel stood near the heartbeat monitor, pale and silent.

Adrian leaned over my bed, his silver hair still damp from the storm that had nearly buried me.

On the phone screen, Victor lifted a glass of water and said, “They both froze to death. That worthless woman got what she deserved.”

My baby’s heartbeat tapped weakly through the machine.

Alive.

Still alive.

Adrian’s jaw tightened.

He tapped the phone, recording everything.

Then he said, calm as ice, “Say that again for the investigators.”

Victor’s smile collapsed.

May you like

Serena’s hand slipped from his arm.

And for the first time since he pushed me off that mountain, my husband looked afraid.
