Chapter 4 - NOT THE FIRST LOCK
Wade’s former wife agreed to speak after learning Tommy had been found.
Her name was Melissa Grant. She lived near Lexington with her seventeen-year-old son, Colin, who had been nine when she married Wade.
Melissa did not describe Wade as cruel from the beginning.
He was attentive, organized, and eager to become a father. He coached Colin’s baseball team and repaired the family’s porch. Problems began when Colin’s grades dropped and he started having panic attacks after Melissa’s mother died.
Wade called the behavior disrespect.
Frank suggested a “structured reset system.”
He visited from Ohio, removed the knob from a walk-in closet, and installed an exterior bolt. Wade kept Colin inside for short periods at first. Then the punishments grew longer.
Melissa objected.
Wade told her she was undermining him.
Frank warned that a custody dispute would expose her old treatment for depression. Patricia told relatives Melissa was raising a violent child.
The language matched the statements about Ava.
“Why wasn’t Wade charged?” Ryan asked during the recorded interview.
Melissa looked toward her attorney.
“Because I agreed to a confidential custody settlement. Colin was removed from the house. Wade gave up visitation. I wanted my son out more than I wanted a public fight.”
She had saved photographs and emails, but the child-welfare investigation closed after Colin was safe and Melissa declined further participation.
She regretted that decision.
“I thought if Wade lost access to Colin, it was over,” she said. “I didn’t understand his family would simply find another woman with children.”
Diane had known there was a prior complaint.
Wade told her Melissa fabricated it during an ugly divorce. Frank showed her the settlement page stating there was no admission of wrongdoing. Patricia insisted Colin had attacked Wade first.
Diane chose their version.
“I was tired of being alone,” she admitted during a child-services interview. “Wade wanted a family. He wanted to help with the kids.”
She ignored the lock because accepting its meaning would require canceling the wedding and admitting she had brought danger into the house.
The investigation also revealed that Frank had not merely installed Tommy’s bolt.
He created weekly behavior charts for both children.
Tommy lost points for crying, leaving food, asking to call Ryan outside scheduled times, and wetting the bed. Ava lost points for questioning Wade, closing her bedroom door, and “encouraging disobedience.”
The charts were stored in a shared online folder.
One file was titled AVA ESCALATION PLAN.
It was created six weeks before the wedding.
The document described her as “fixated on rescuing Tommy” and likely to “create a public scene when denied control.” It recommended documenting every outburst, keeping relatives present during confrontations, and seeking a mental-health evaluation if she became physically aggressive.
The final entry was dated the morning of the wedding.
Place Tommy in reset before ceremony if behavior requires it. Keep Ava away from key. Ensure witnesses remain in main room.
Ryan read the line twice.
The wedding was not only the day Ava discovered Tommy locked upstairs.
It was the day Wade and Frank expected her to react.
Detective Morales cautioned that the document did not prove they intended Wade to be injured. It did show they anticipated conflict and planned to use Ava’s response against her.
Diane’s name appeared in the editing history.
She had added one sentence:
Ryan will be overseas and unable to interfere immediately.
When Rachel confronted her, Diane said Frank told her the plan would create evidence for family therapy.
She claimed she never agreed to lock Tommy during the ceremony.
Ryan wanted to believe there was a boundary she had not crossed.
Then investigators recovered a message she sent Wade that morning.
Keep Tommy upstairs until the vows are finished. Ava won’t risk embarrassing herself in front of Dad.
