Chapter 5 - THE REASON AVA KEPT HITTING HIM
Diane moved out of the house the following morning.
She gave Detective Ruiz access to the family tablet, smart-lock records, and messages Wade believed she had deleted.
The records established that the linen-room bolt was used forty-three times in four months.
Some lock periods lasted minutes.
Seven lasted longer than two hours.
The longest began at 10:14 p.m. and ended after six the next morning.
The system could not show who was inside.
Tommy’s school attendance filled in part of the answer. On mornings after long lock periods, he was often absent or arrived late.
Wade called those days behavioral resets.
The family tablet contained photographs of damaged drywall near the linen-room handle. Wade had sent them to Diane with messages blaming Tommy for “trying to manipulate his way out.”
Another message referred to Ava.
She’s teaching him that rules don’t apply if he cries loudly enough.
The wedding-day timeline was reconstructed from photographs, guest videos, the smart lock, and witness statements.
At 5:38 p.m., Tommy spilled punch.
At 5:44, Wade took him upstairs.
At 5:46, the linen-room bolt closed.
At 6:03, Ava went upstairs.
A wedding photographer accidentally captured Wade following her near the staircase.
Guests heard shouting at 6:07.
At 6:09, Wade fell against the lower railing.
Ava had struck him multiple times.
The question was whether she continued after Tommy was no longer in immediate danger.
Ava asked to speak with the prosecutor directly, with her attorney present.
“I heard Tommy stop crying,” she said. “That’s why I kept hitting Wade.”
She believed her brother had lost consciousness inside the room.
Wade was stronger and blocking the bolt. Ava hit his ribs, jaw, and face. He grabbed her dress and pulled her toward the stairs.
She struck him again.
He lost his footing and hit the post.
The moment he fell, she opened the door.
Tommy was awake but struggling to breathe through a panic attack.
Ava did not continue attacking Wade after he fell.
Several guests claimed otherwise because they saw her standing above him with bloody knuckles. The wedding photographer’s continuous timestamps showed only seven seconds between Wade falling and Ava reaching the locked door.
The evidence supported defense of another person.
It also showed a frightened child using dangerous force because every adult response had failed before she reached the stairs.
The juvenile prosecutor declined to file charges.
The decision did not celebrate what Ava had done.
It recognized why she had done it and what the evidence could prove.
Wade was arrested after prosecutors approved charges for child endangerment, unlawful restraint, evidence tampering, and offenses related to the fraudulent residential-program application.
His injuries did not disappear because he faced charges.
His victimhood ended where the full timeline began.
The major twist reached Diane through her own messages.
Wade had not proposed the wedding date for sentimental reasons. He accelerated it because the residential program required a legal parent or stepparent to participate in intake and because my overseas orders made an immediate custody challenge less likely.
He had treated the wedding as a deadline for gaining authority over Ava.
Diane removed her wedding ring during a supervised visit with the children.
Tommy watched her place it on the table.
“Are you coming home now?” he asked.
Diane began to say yes.
Then she stopped.
“I’m going to earn the right to be somewhere safe with you.”
