Chapter 7 - THE APARTMENT EMILY NEVER GOT TO SEE

Michael found the answer partly in his own email archive.
Emily had not merely asked about changing documents.
She had been planning to leave the house.
Not leave Ethan permanently that day.
Leave physically.
She wanted to spend her final months with Margaret.
Michael showed her an email from Emily dated April 22.
Mom has a downstairs bedroom. If I move there, hospice can set up without Ethan controlling every visit. I need to ask if she still wants me.
Margaret pressed her fingers against her lips.
She had wanted her.
She would have emptied the entire house for her.
Emily never asked.
Because the next fake message from Margaret arrived the following morning.
Do not turn my home into the place you run every time your marriage gets difficult.
Margaret stood abruptly.
She walked to the office window.
Michael waited.
“So they kept her there.”
“We know someone impersonated you. We are still establishing who.”
“Why?”
Michael opened another file.
Emily had confronted Ethan about Vanessa.
Not a suspicion.
She had found hotel charges and messages.
She asked him to leave.
Ethan refused.
He told her separation during hospice would create unnecessary chaos.
Vanessa temporarily disappeared from the house.
Then returned as a supposed helper when Emily weakened.
Margaret turned.
“She knew Vanessa was his mistress and still let her care for her?”
“Emily wrote that she felt she had no practical alternative some days.”
That sentence made Margaret furious in a new direction.
Isolation did not always look like locked doors.
Sometimes it looked like one exhausted person becoming dependent on whoever remained after everybody else had been pushed away.
Michael continued.
Emily had also discovered personal funds leaving an individual investment account she inherited from her father.
Not enormous compared with some estates.
Enough to matter.
Payments had gone toward rent on an apartment in White Plains.
The lease was in Vanessa’s name.
Ethan had described several transfers to Emily as medical and household expenses.
They were not.
Emily planned to confront him with Michael present.
She never got well enough to attend the scheduled meeting.
Now the motive widened.
If Emily moved to Margaret’s house, Ethan would lose control over daily access.
He would lose control over her phone.
She could speak privately with attorneys.
And the affair-funded apartment would become harder to hide.
Then Michael found one more clue.
The lease began seven months before Emily’s death.
May you like
Ethan and Vanessa had not been waiting for the cancer to end the marriage.
They were already building the next one while controlling how much of Emily’s current life she could still reach.
