Chapter 2 - The Golden Son Turns White

Mom’s scream ripped through the house so sharply that even Brandon forgot to perform innocence.

Dad pushed past him and thundered down the stairs.

I followed with my suitcase handle in one hand.

The living room looked normal at first. Same beige couch. Same family photos where Brandon stood in the center and I hovered near the edge like an extra. Same framed Bible verse over the mantel about truth setting people free, which had always felt like a joke nobody else understood.

Mom stood by the front window, one hand covering her mouth.

Outside, a black sedan sat at the curb.

Behind it was a county sheriff’s car.

Behind that was a gray SUV with the Ellison University seal on the door.

Dad froze halfway down the stairs.

“What is this?” he snapped.

Brandon whispered, “Ava.”

I looked at him.

He was not smirking now.

A woman in a navy suit stepped out of the gray SUV. She carried a leather folder and moved with the calm of someone who had ruined many lies before breakfast.

Behind her came an older man in a brown jacket, then a sheriff’s deputy.

Mom turned toward me slowly.

“What did you do?”

I set my suitcase upright beside the door.

“What you asked,” I said. “I stopped making it harder.”

The doorbell rang.

Nobody moved.

It rang again.

Dad pointed at me. “You will stay quiet.”

For the first time in my life, I smiled at him and said nothing.

He opened the door.

The woman in the navy suit gave him a professional nod.

“Mr. Carter? I’m Meredith Shaw, director of student financial compliance at Ellison University. This is Investigator Paul Ramirez from the county financial crimes unit. We’re here regarding documentation submitted by Ava Carter at 4:12 this morning.”

Mom made a small choking sound.

Dad’s face tightened. “Documentation?”

Investigator Ramirez stepped forward. “We’d like to speak with Ava.”

Dad blocked the doorway with his body.

“My daughter is eighteen. She’s confused. There’s been family conflict.”

Meredith Shaw looked past him.

Her eyes found mine.

“Ava, are you safe?”

The question hit me harder than I expected.

No adult had ever asked me that in my own house.

Dad laughed, too loud. “Safe? This is ridiculous. She’s upset because we disciplined her.”

Brandon started backing toward the kitchen.

Investigator Ramirez noticed.

“Brandon Carter?”

Brandon stopped.

Dad looked at him.

Mom looked at him.

Then, from the kitchen, Brandon’s phone buzzed again.

He flinched like a guilty dog.

Meredith opened her folder.

“We received copies of loan applications, electronic signatures, trust disbursement records, pawn receipts, and correspondence regarding Ms. Carter’s attempted university deferral.”

Dad’s mouth went hard.

“That is private family business.”

“No,” I said from behind him. “It’s my name.”

He turned slowly.

For once, he did not look angry first.

He looked surprised.

Like it had never occurred to him that I could speak while other people were listening.

Mom rushed toward me. “Ava, honey, whatever you sent, we can fix this privately.”

I looked at her.

“You mean hide it.”

Her face crumpled.

Brandon suddenly stepped forward, voice shaking.

“I didn’t know she had all that.”

Dad snapped, “Shut up.”

The room went silent.

Investigator Ramirez looked from Brandon to Dad.

“Mr. Carter,” he said, “that sounds like a good place to start.”
