Rachel met Donna at the police station on December 28.

Garrett came too.

So did Detective Navarro, who walked them through the difference between a family accusation and a formal theft complaint supported by evidence.

Donna’s hand shook while she signed the statement.

Rachel knew why.

Not because the facts were uncertain anymore, but because once ink met paper, Donna was choosing public reality over private rescue.

Jessica had always counted on rescue.

From Donna after the divorce. From Garrett when tempers blew. From everyone who preferred her excuses to her fury.

No more.

The report included the original video clip, the hallway footage, Donna’s description of the missing emerald set, the holiday planner note referencing the tote bag, the jeweler’s identification, and Donna’s prior boundary dispute with Jessica over the set.

Rachel also gave a statement about the science-kit incident and the physical aggression toward her and the children, though the detective warned that property damage inside a family home was often harder to prosecute cleanly unless Donna chose to pursue it.

Donna did.

That surprised even Rachel.

Afterward, sitting in the parking lot, Donna said, “I’m not doing this because of a jewelry set.”

Rachel looked at her.

“I know.”

“I’m doing it because she reached for Melody.”

Rachel’s throat tightened.

That same afternoon Garrett and Rachel changed their plans for the rest of the holidays. They canceled New Year’s brunch with Garrett’s cousins. They returned the kids’ calls from well-meaning relatives with simple answers: We’re keeping things quiet this week.

Quiet cost them.

Garrett’s aunt Linda left a voicemail saying Donna should be ashamed of involving the police in “a misunderstanding.” A cousin texted Rachel that children often “see weird things on screens.”

Rachel did not answer.

The one message that mattered came from Jessica’s attorney.

Jessica denied theft and demanded that Donna preserve all electronic files “relevant to the dispute.” She also insisted that if the emerald set was eventually “discovered” among Rachel’s belongings, Rachel’s false statements would have consequences.

Rachel read that line twice.

Then handed the phone to Garrett.

Even after the videos, even after the planner note, Jessica was still preparing the same ending. If the set turned up near Rachel’s things, the family would be told Rachel staged everything.

Only now the threat landed differently.

Because it revealed fear.

If Jessica still needed to talk about Rachel’s belongings, then either the set had not yet been safely disposed of—or Jessica was still clinging to a framing plan she had failed to execute cleanly.

That night, while folding laundry, Rachel realized there was one question she had not properly asked.

“Where did the set go after the purse?” she said aloud.

Garrett looked up from the kitchen table.

“What?”

“The video shows it going into her purse. The purse is searched. It’s gone. She notes my tote in her planner. She panics when Melody speaks. So where did she move it after she realized someone might have seen her?”
