Chapter 14 - THE LAST TIME DANIEL ASKED HER TO ABSORB IT

The backyard looked almost exactly as it had the day of the barbecue.

Same picnic table.

Same grill.

Same deck stairs.

Without forty relatives filling the yard, it looked smaller.

Claire stood beside the table.

Daniel came outside carrying two glasses of iced tea.

She didn’t touch hers.

“Ava’s at Michelle’s,” he said.

“I know.”

“She asked to go.”

Claire nodded.

Daniel sat.

“That used to scare the hell out of me.”

“And now?”

“It still does.”

At least that was honest.

He folded his hands.

“I want you to come home.”

Claire looked toward the kitchen windows.

“Why?”

“Because I love you.”

“That isn’t enough.”

Daniel nodded.

“I know.”

“Do you?”

“Yes.”

Claire waited.

Daniel continued.

“I used you.”

The directness surprised her.

He looked down.

“Not intentionally at first. But every time Ava was mad, I needed someone else to be the problem so I could stay the good parent.”

Claire said nothing.

“I told myself you were stronger. More rational. That you understood.”

“You mean you thought I’d stay.”

“Yes.”

The word landed softly.

He continued.

“I knew she exaggerated sometimes. I corrected her privately because I didn’t want to embarrass her. Then I expected you to take the public hit because I thought our marriage could survive it.”

Claire looked at him.

“And the barbecue?”

“I didn’t know what happened.”

“You grabbed me anyway.”

“Yes.”

“You told me to leave.”

“Yes.”

Daniel’s eyes reddened.

“I’m sorry.”

Claire believed him.

That was the hardest part.

If he had remained arrogant, leaving would have been simple.

Instead he looked like a man finally seeing the architecture of his own damage.

“What happens if Ava does it again?” Claire asked.

“I ask questions.”

“And if she says that means you love me more?”

“I let her be angry.”

“And if Michelle says you’re failing her?”

“I don’t use Ava to prove Michelle wrong.”

Claire nodded slowly.

Daniel looked at her.

“Is there anything I can do?”

“Yes.”

Hope appeared.

Claire continued.

“Stop asking me to decide today.”

He looked down.

Then nodded.

Claire reached into her handbag.

Daniel tensed when he saw the brown folder.

Claire placed it on the picnic table.

His face drained, just as it had at the barbecue.

“I’m not giving this to Ava,” Claire said.

Daniel stared at it.

“I’m not giving it to your family. I’m not using her childhood to humiliate you.”

His shoulders loosened slightly.

“But I am giving my attorney the parts relevant to our marriage.”

His eyes closed.

There it was.

The final consequence he could not talk Claire out of.

“Are you filing?”

“I’m preparing.”

Daniel opened his eyes.

“Claire—”

“No.”

She stood.

“For four years, every crisis ended with me reassuring you before I had decided what I needed.”

She picked up her handbag but left the folder on the table between them.

“Not this one.”

Daniel stared at the file.

The object he had feared for weeks was no longer dangerous because of what it could reveal publicly.

May you like

It was dangerous because Claire no longer needed to use it as a threat.

She had already stopped protecting him.
