Chapter 1 - THE CALL BENEATH THE TABLE

At 2:07 in the morning, my eight-year-old grandson whispered, “Grandpa, please come—but don’t let him hear you.”

Rain tapped against my bedroom windows in San Antonio. Behind Ethan’s voice, I heard glass break, my daughter cry out, and Jason shout that no one was leaving.

“Get under the table,” I told Ethan. “Keep the phone with you.”

The line went quiet but did not disconnect.

I called 911 from another phone while pulling on my coat. The dispatcher told me officers were on the way and warned me not to enter if Jason had a weapon.

I entered anyway.

Emily’s front door stood open. Light spilled from the kitchen, where a chair lay on its side and broken glass glittered across the tile.

Jason stood over my daughter with one fist raised.

Emily was on the floor in her blue nightdress, reaching toward the table. Ethan crouched beneath it in striped pajamas, crying so quietly it hurt worse than screaming.

“Grandpa,” he said. “Don’t let him hear you.”

Jason turned.

“What the hell are you doing here?”

I stepped between him and Emily.

“Get away from them.”

“No one leaves,” he said.

His hand closed around the back of a kitchen chair.

I was sixty-six, with a bad shoulder and no fantasy that I could overpower a man nearly thirty years younger. I kept my distance and told Emily the police were coming.

Jason laughed. “You called them over a family argument?”

Emily crawled toward Ethan. I moved with her, keeping myself between them and Jason.

“Touch them again,” I said, “and whatever happens next belongs to you.”

Ethan reached through the chair legs and caught his mother’s sleeve.

“He said Mom would disappear.”

Emily stopped moving.

Jason’s eyes shifted beneath the table.

A phone lay facedown beside Ethan’s knee, its screen pulsing with the active emergency call.

The dispatcher had heard everything.

Jason dropped the chair just as red and blue light swept across the kitchen wall.

He looked at Emily, not me.

“You have no idea what you’ve done,” he said.

Emily held Ethan against her chest.

“For once,” she answered, “neither do you.”
